Job description
MEP Resident Engineer

Duration: 9 months (chance of extension)

Outside IR35

Location: Norfolk or Kent

Role profile

Responsible for monitoring of contractors and their compliance to the designs, specifications, and RAMS, identifying and coordinating interfaces, monitoring performance and progress, liaising with design coordinators for contractor TQ's and proposing technical solutions, finishing and close‑out of the MEP works to cost, time and quality.

Responsibilities
  • The role encompasses the monitoring, inspection and coordination of subcontractor installation and commissioning of the following services:
    • Hot & cold water systems
    • Lighting (internal and external)
    • Electrical distribution (LV)
    • Heating, ventilation and air‑conditioning (HVAC)
    • Telecommunications
    • Security systems (building and CCTV)
    • Fire systems
    • Lifts
    • Bund water control units
  • Monitor the programme on a daily basis and ensure that the critical path is not affected.
  • Report any programme deviations to the Building Services Project Manager and discuss/propose any corrective measures at site level to maintain the project end date.
  • Coordinate the interface works in line with programme and design requirements.
  • Review Method Statements and Risk Assessments.
  • Carry out regular inspections of the work on site.
  • Compare completed work with drawings and specifications to ensure consistency or that variations have been through correct approvals processes.
  • Resolve issues related to the interpretation of agreed drawings and specifications.
  • Measure and sample products and materials to ensure they meet all required quality standards.
  • Identify defects, provide options for correcting them and facilitate and keep records of any amendments subsequently required.
  • Monitor and report on progress to clients, project managers, design team members and quantity surveyors.
  • Maintain (and update daily) the snag/punch list.
  • Undertake snag/punch list closeout with client representatives.
  • Coordinate with the Principal Contractor’s Temporary Works Coordinator (PC TWC) in accordance with BS 5975.
  • Works within limits of authority and ensure timely decisions on open issues, escalating if necessary.
  • Chair technical and progress meetings with subcontractors and internal stakeholders.
  • Attend client meetings.
  • Manage TQ's with tenderers and subcontractors and the client and ensure responses are provided within the contractual period of reply.
  • Ensure that relevant documentation (RAMS, temporary works register, ITP's) is in place and approved prior to works commencing.
  • Support the site manager and site safety advisor in developing a health and safety culture at site level and in organising audits of subcontractors.
  • Ensure that the quality of the works is in line with approved design and that all non‑conformities are recorded on NCR forms and included in the NCR database.
  • Assist the Quality Manager in Projects and SPM to report deviations from quality standards and measures that are in place to address these issues.
  • Undertake frequent site walks daily.
  • Conduct regular site safety tours together or without the SHE Advisor.
  • Ensure all equipment on the site has the appropriate documentation available to verify it is safe to use; quarantine equipment if documentation is missing.
  • Issue daily/weekly/monthly reports to the Work Package Manager (including taking and uploading daily progress photographs).
  • Ensure that all key site documents are properly stored in the project folder.
  • Ensure all site installation records are captured efficiently in the red mark‑up drawings which will be issued to SPM / Work Package Manager.
  • Monitor contractors for compliance with site rules and task‑specific RAMS.
  • Liaise with site personnel on the allocated works and deliverables and ensure professional stakeholder management.
  • Abide by all business compliance requirements in line with company policies, for example, Business Conduct Guidelines & confidential information.
Experience

10 years experience within the building or industrial services industry.

Qualifications and Requirements
Mandatory
  • Experience within the construction, process and/or industrial sectors.
  • Strong understanding of building services installations.
  • Proactive attitude.
  • Familiar with BSRIA BG 6.
  • Ideally possessing an HNC/HND or above in electrical or mechanical engineering or equivalent (e.g., NVQ 4 or above in building services).
  • Qualifications in:
    • 18th edition electrical installations
    • City & Guilds electrical inspection & testing (Unrestricted)
    • City & Guilds design, erection & verification of electrical installations
  • Good standard of IT literacy – especially MS Office 365 solutions.
  • Assertive and strong personality.
  • Good understanding of CDM Regulations 2015.
  • Good understanding of health and safety legislation.
  • CSCS technical, supervisory or managerial card.
  • SSSTS.
Desirable
  • Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g., CIBSE or IET).
  • Experience of design & build projects.
  • SMSTS.
  • TWC/TWS.
  • National Grid Person & BESC.
  • HSE First Aid at Work.
