Job description

Prospero Teaching a fantastic Mentor to provide consistent, positive support to a 9-year-old child who is currently finding the classroom environment challenging and is at risk of permanent exclusion (PEX). The mentor will help build the child's confidence, self-esteem, and engagement through activities that reflect their interests‑particularly castles, kings and queens, and painting. A strong, trusting relationship with a positive adult role model is key to helping this child make progress.

As a Mentor, you will:
  • Establish a safe, trusting, and positive relationship with the child.
  • Plan and deliver engaging sessions based on the child's interests (e.g., castle-themed art projects, storytelling, creative play).
  • Support the child's emotional well being and social development.
  • Encourage self‑expression and confidence through creative and imaginative activities.
  • Provide a calm and consistent presence to help the child regulate and feel secure.
About you:

Essential:

  • Experience working with children, particularly those with SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) needs.
  • Creative and imaginative approach to engagement.
  • Strong communication, patience, and empathy.
  • Ability to commit to regular weekly sessions.
  • Enhanced DBS check (or willingness to obtain one).

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of trauma‑informed or therapeutic approaches.
  • Experience in mentoring, youth work, youth support, 1:1 roles or experience within UK schools.

Position – Mentor

Essential & Desirable Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience working with young people
  • Background in Youth Work, UK schools, Mentoring or other related roles.
  • Experience of working with learners with SEN
To be eligible for this role through Prospero teaching, you must:
  • Hold right to work in the UK
  • Hold an enhanced child barred list DBS certificate registered with the online update service or be willing to process a new application
  • Provide references upon request
  • Possess up to date Safeguarding Training (or a willingness to undertake this)
