Job summary

Hone is hiring a backend-focused engineer to own the core infra that powers our agentic AI engines. You will maintain sandboxes, runners, and the event network that ties engines to customer systems, building scalable and robust infrastructure.

The role requires design and operation of production-scale systems, with a strong emphasis on distributed architectures, concurrency, and secure, efficient execution. San Francisco-based, visa sponsorship offered.

Qualifications

• 2+ years of engineering experience, or equivalent depth from research, open source or personal projects.
• Experience at a fast-growing startup is a plus.
• You've designed and built systems from scratch.
• You've scaled and operated production infrastructure under real load.
• Strong fundamentals: distributed systems, Linux, networking, concurrency, file systems.
• You code daily with agents and understand what you ship.
• You tinker with technology because you care how it works.

Responsibilities

• Own the layer engines run on: sandboxes and their state, harness runners, and event infrastructure.
• Build durable, scalable, and efficient infrastructure for agent swarms.
• Develop a unified deployment architecture for SaaS, single-tenant and customer VPCs.

The Role

Engines orchestrate agent swarms for weeks or months, hold state, and take real actions inside a company's systems. You'll own the layer every engine runs on as we scale: sandboxes and their state, the runners that house our harness, the event infrastructure that connects it all, and the architecture that lets us deploy seamlessly into customer environments.

What You'll Work On

• MicroVM sandboxes that live for months, with snapshotting, forking and replay.

• Harness runners that are durable, efficient, and nearly free to start.

• Event infrastructure that connects engines, agents, sandboxes and customer systems.

• Concurrency, synchronization and locking within agent swarms.

• One deployment architecture for SaaS, single-tenant and customer VPCs.

• Internal AI tooling that automates our infra, deployment monitoring, and maintenance.

Requirements

• 2+ years of engineering experience, or equivalent depth from research, open source or your own projects

• Time at a fast-growing startup

• You've designed and built systems from scratch

• You've scaled and operated production infrastructure under real load

• Strong systems fundamentals: distributed systems, Linux, networking, concurrency, file systems

• You use coding agents every day and still understand every line you ship

• You build and tinker for fun because you genuinely care about how the technology works

Nice to Have

• You've built a sandboxing, durable-execution or browser-infra product

• Security experience, traditional or agent-specific: network sandboxing, RBAC, prompt injection. A CTF background is a plus.
