Job summary

Our Receptionists are the first point of contact for patients, clinicians and other services. Excellent written and spoken communication skills are essential to respond to any request in a timely manner. Experience in a similar role is essential, but ongoing training is regularly provided.

The medical receptionist must provide cover, help and support to patients and clinicians, maintaining strict confidentiality and delivering excellent patient care. This post is primarily for Danescourt Surgery but requires flexible working across both sites as needed.

Key responsibilities
  • Greet and signpost patients to the appropriate healthcare professional or service (care navigation).
  • Register patients, book appointments and process information (electronic and hard copy).
  • Act as the central point of contact, distributing information, messages and enquiries to the clinical team.
  • Receive and make calls professionally, ensuring names and site are provided to patients when answering the telephone.
  • Deal with patients’ queries, including medical results, and allocate calls to the appropriate member of the healthcare team.
  • Update patient records such as telephone numbers and addresses on each contact.
Person specification
Qualifications (Essential)
  • Basic numeracy and literacy skills (e.g. GCSE/O Level English and Maths).
Qualifications (Desirable)
  • Attendance at Practice Receptionist training or NVQ course, or working towards this.
Experience (Essential)
  • Experience working with the public in a busy environment and within a multidisciplinary team.
Experience (Desirable)
  • Experience working within a busy general practice setting.
