Job description

Path Links is a networked NHS Pathology service offering a wide range of diagnostic investigations on tissue, blood, and fluid samples. All Path Links laboratories are accredited to United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) ISO 15189 standards.

About the Role

A Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) is an integral part of a pathology laboratory team and works closely with Biomedical Scientists to deliver a first class diagnostic service to medical professionals. The role is centered around ensuring patients receive the best level of care through accurate analysis of their samples and the results that inform clinical decisions.

The position is based within a Microbiology team, providing support to both clinicians and general practitioners. Delegated work is performed under the direct and indirect supervision of a State Registered Biomedical Scientist (BMS) using Standard Operating Procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Perform delegated laboratory tasks following SOPs.
  • Undertake extensive in‑house training and competency assessments to achieve NVQ Level II equivalent knowledge.
  • Work with a variety of specimen types and equipment to deliver accurate analytical results.
  • Maintain general laboratory duties including cleaning, stock management, and equipment maintenance.
  • Participate in a weekday late shift and weekend rota, including public holidays.
  • Follow a shift schedule allocated well in advance to allow for planning.
Qualifications
  • Completion of NVQ Level II or equivalent qualification.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Good organisational and time‑management skills.
  • Willingness to attend training modules and meet competency standards.
Working Hours

The role requires a flexible schedule, including weekday late shifts and weekend work. All shifts are planned and communicated in advance.
