Barts Health NHS Trust is looking for a dedicatedMedical Laboratory Assistant (Band 2)to join our Central Specimen Reception team at The Royal London Hospital — one of the UK’s leading teaching hospitals.

About Us

Barts Health NHS Trust is part of the East & South East London Pathology Partnership, delivering high-quality diagnostic services across three NHS Trusts. The Royal London Hospital is a major hub for trauma, specialist, and teaching services, and home to one of the largest children’s hospitals in the UK.

About the Role

As a Medical Laboratory Assistant, you’ll play a key role in the smooth operation of our pathology services. Working in a fast-paced environment, you will:

  • Receive, sort, and prepare patient specimens for laboratory analysis
  • Accurately enter patient and sample data into laboratory information systems
  • Operate and maintain automated specimen processing systems
  • Handle telephone and in-person enquiries with professionalism and care
  • Support the team with general housekeeping, stock management, and quality control

Full training and support will be provided, including access to standard operating procedures and ongoing development opportunities.

What We’re Looking For

We’re seeking individuals who are:

  • Organised, reliable, and able to follow procedures precisely
  • Comfortable working with biological samples and laboratory equipment
  • Confident communicators with good IT and keyboard skills
  • GCSE qualified in English and Maths (or equivalent)
  • Willing to work flexible shifts, including weekends and bank holidays
  • VDU/data entry experience
  • Comfortable answering telephone calls
  • A minimum 6 months paid NHS experience in the last 3 years.

Shift Patterns:

  • 5 x 7.5 hour shifts a week, Monday to Sunday
  • 11:30 - 20:00 shift pattern
