Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services (BSPS) is one of the largest NHS‑led pathology networks in the UK, formed in partnership between Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust, Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust. This role is based at Wexham Park Hospital and offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to a busy and progressive pathology service. As a Medical Laboratory Assistant, you will support the scientific and technical staff in the receipt, preparation and processing of patient samples to ensure accurate and timely results. The post requires attention to detail, teamwork and adherence to health, safety and quality standards. This position is not suitable for graduates seeking progression to a Biomedical Scientist role. Main Duties of the Job
- Work as part of the pathology team to provide an efficient, accurate and timely service to all users of the department. Duties include receiving, labelling and booking samples onto the laboratory information system to ensure rapid turnaround times.
- Prepare specimens for analysis, maintain accurate records and support laboratory staff in delivering a high‑quality diagnostic service.
- Be based at Frimley Park Hospital but may occasionally work at the Royal Surrey County Hospital.
- Display efficiency, good organisation, attention to detail and strong communication skills. Good keyboard skills are desirable.
- Be a reliable team player, open to learning and developing new skills, with full training and ongoing professional development provided.
Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities
- Assist in the preparation, processing and storage of pathology samples to support the delivery of an efficient and high‑quality laboratory service.
- Perform simple designated tests, including those on Point of Care analysers, under appropriate supervision.
- Follow laboratory procedures to identify and reject inadequate or mislabelled samples and assist with packaging and dispatching specimens to referral laboratories.
- Process and store clinical trial samples according to protocol and assist in the training of new staff.
- Comply with local Standard Operating Procedures and quality and safety standards.

Qualifications
- O’ level / GCSE standard English and maths.
Desirable Criteria
- Basic knowledge of biology and chemistry.
- RSA II.
- Medical terminology.
- Understanding of basic health and safety principles.
Skills
- Friendly and interactive in working groups.
- Ability to work in an environment with frequent exposure to body fluids, biological and chemical hazards.
