Job summary

Avalere Health is hiring a Medical Editor to support projects by editing and proofreading scientific materials, checking data, and handling copyright issues. You will work with internal teams and external stakeholders, gaining broad experience across multiple accounts.

You will edit for accuracy, clarity, and compliance, while applying house and client guidelines. The role emphasizes independent work, meeting deadlines, and ongoing professional development.

Qualifications

• Degree in a scientific or related field; advanced degree advantageous (MD, PhD, PharmD, MSc, or equivalent).
• 1 year+ experience in medical or scientific editing within a healthcare consultancy or medical communications agency.
• Familiarity with medical style guides (AMA Manual of Style) and applying guidelines to deliverables.
• Knowledge of copyright permissions and how they apply in medical communications/pharma industry.
• Proficiency in internet and PubMed searches, and literature reviews.

Responsibilities

The Role

The Medical Editor at Avalere Health supports assigned projects and accounts by editing and proofreading materials, checking data, contributing to competitive intelligence writing, assessing copyright permissions, and completing other requested project tasks.

Working under the direction of senior team members, the Medical Editor primarily works with internal colleagues, keeping them informed of project progress, while also communicating externally with congress organizers, journals, and copyright holders. As Medical Editor you will work across multiple accounts and gain broad experience in medical editing–related tasks. Through hands-on experience with various project types, you will develop your medical editing skills, undertake more technical editing and data-checking tasks, and build your copyright knowledge as you progress in the role.

What You\'ll Do

• Edits and proofreads scientific and medical communications for accuracy, clarity, consistency, readability, and compliance with client, house, journal, and congress style requirements.
• Reviews content critically, raising appropriate queries and recommending changes to improve flow, comprehensiveness , and suitability for the intended audience.
• Applies and maintains client-specific style guidelines and editorial processes, using judgment to agree on the appropriate level of editing or proofreading for each project.
• Performs data checking to verify that scientific information and claims are accurate, used consistently and supported by source references.
• Assesses copyright permissions requirements and provides clear, practical guidance to project and account teams.
• Manages assigned work across multiple projects and accounts, delivering high-quality outputs to agreed timelines and escalating issues as needed.
• Manages time and workload effectively, communicates proactively with editorial and account teams, and contributes reliably to successful project delivery.

About You

• Working knowledge of medical style guides, such as the AMA Manual of Style, and proficiency in applying the necessary guidelines to project deliverables.
• Knowledge of client reference and review processes, and online reference-retrieval tools.
• Knowledge of copyright permissions and how they apply in the medical communications/pharmaceutical industry.
• Proficiency in i nternet and PubMed searches, and knowledge of literature reviews and how to conduct them.
• Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office , specifically Word, PowerPoint, and Excel; Adobe Acrobat; and the reference management software EndNote.
• Ability to prioritise, work independently with minimal supervision, and collaborate effectively as part of a team.
