Job description

Do you want to work with the 15th fastest-growing startup in Europe? If so, you’re in the right place.

AssetCool is one of Europe’s fastest-growing startups, building the fastest path to more power on the grid.

We’re tackling one of the most urgent challenges in the global energy transition: grid congestion. Electricity demand is rising fast; driven by electrification, AI and data centres. While traditional grid upgrades take years, demand exists today. The grid isn’t ready.

AssetCool delivers robotic grid upgrades that physically increase the capacity of existing transmission lines by up to 30%, without rebuilding infrastructure. Using advanced robotics and proprietary photonic coatings, we unlock data-centre-scale capacity in weeks to months, not years and at a fraction of the cost and disruption of conventional approaches.

Our technology goes beyond capacity. We reduce losses, prevent corrosion, cut corona noise and generate high-value operational data that supports smarter grid operation and maintenance. Our systems are already deployed globally, and we just raised a big funding round from leading energy and climate investors.

AssetCool is one of the most innovation-driven companies in the UK energy sector and we’re scaling fast! If you’re ambitious, mission-driven and excited to work on real deployments that strengthen the industry that really matters, AssetCool is where you can make it happen.

Role Overview

AssetCool is looking for a practical, hands-on Mechatronics Technician to turn engineering ideas into robust prototypes and repeatable tests. You will work closely with mechanical, electrical, robotics and fluidics engineers to assemble, modify and troubleshoot robotic platforms, fluid-delivery systems, test rigs and supporting laboratory equipment.

This role suits someone who enjoys making things work: a natural builder who is comfortable moving between a workbench, a test rig and a prototype in the field. Curiosity, safe working practices, attention to detail and a genuine enthusiasm for DIY, fabrication and learning new tools are central to success.

Key Responsibilities
  • Build, assemble, modify and repair prototypes across robotic and fluidics subsystems using engineering drawings, sketches, bills of materials and guidance from engineers.
  • Set up and operate laboratory equipment and test rigs for development and validation activities, including electrical instruments, sensors, pumps and flow or pressure measurement equipment.
  • Support planned experiments and functional tests by preparing fixtures, configuring equipment, recording test parameters and collecting accurate measurements, photographs and observations.
  • Fabricate brackets, enclosures, fixtures and prototype parts using hand and power tools and, where trained, workshop machinery and digital fabrication equipment.
  • Carry out mechanical assembly, basic wiring, soldering and crimping, and install tubing, fittings, valves, pumps, motors, actuators and sensors.
  • Diagnose practical faults such as leaks, loose connections, damaged wiring, alignment problems and sensor or actuator issues; complete repairs or clearly elevate findings.
  • Inspect, maintain and help calibrate laboratory equipment, test rigs and tooling so they remain safe, serviceable and ready to use.
  • Keep clear build and test records, including configurations, measurements, rework, issues and lessons learned; contribute to work instructions and test procedures.
  • Manage prototype parts, consumables and spares, and maintain an organised, efficient laboratory and workshop environment.
  • Follow risk assessments, safe systems of work and relevant electrical, mechanical and chemical handling procedures at all times.
Required Skills & Experience
  • A technical qualification, apprenticeship or equivalent practical experience in mechatronics, electromechanical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, manufacturing, maintenance or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrable hands‑on experience building, assembling, repairing or testing mechanical, electrical or electromechanical equipment.
  • Confidence using common hand tools, power tools and bench equipment safely and accurately.
  • Ability to interpret mechanical drawings, assembly instructions, wiring diagrams, schematics and bills of materials.
  • Basic electrical skills, including safe use of a multimeter and experience with wiring, connectors, soldering or crimping.
  • Sound practical understanding of mechanical assembly, fasteners, shafts, bearings, seals and component alignment.
  • A methodical approach to testing, fault‑finding and recording results, with strong attention to detail.
  • Good communication and teamwork, with the initiative to ask questions, suggest practical improvements and take ownership of workshop tasks.
  • A genuine enthusiasm for DIY, making, repairing and learning how systems work.
Preferred Skills & Experience
  • Experience with fabrication equipment such as 3D printers, laser cutters, drill presses, bandsaws, CNC machines, mills or lathes.
  • Practical knowledge of fluidics, including pumps, valves, regulators, tubing, fittings, flow measurement or pressure testing.
  • Experience working with motors, actuators, sensors, microcontrollers or robotic systems.
  • Familiarity with CAD or CAM software such as SolidWorks or Fusion 360.
  • Experience with oscilloscopes, laboratory power supplies, data‑acquisition equipment or automated test tools.
  • Previous work in an R&D laboratory, startup, prototype workshop, test environment or low-volume manufacturing setting.
Why Join AssetCool?
  • Work on groundbreaking technology revolutionising the power grid.
  • Fast-growing startup with significant industry traction and large-scale projects.
  • Collaborative, innovation-driven team with exciting career growth opportunities.
  • Competitive salary and flexible work options
