Our client, a respected M&E contractor with a strong track record in delivering technically complex projects, is seeking an experienced Mechanical Site Manager to oversee a high-specification laboratory fit-out project in Cambridge.

This long-term freelance opportunity (18 months) offers a stable contract on a prestigious and technically challenging scheme, working with a professional project team to deliver excellence in quality, safety, and performance.

The Role

Reporting into the Project Manager, you will be responsible for managing all on-site mechanical activities, ensuring the smooth coordination and delivery of mechanical services in line with design, specification, and programme requirements.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee and coordinate all mechanical installation works on-site
  • Supervise subcontractors, ensuring quality and adherence to deadlines
  • Manage day-to-day site activities, including planning, scheduling, and progress reporting
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards
  • Liaise closely with the Project Manager, Design Team, and client representatives
  • Conduct inspections and sign-off on mechanical installations
  • Manage materials, logistics, and site resources efficiently
  • Support commissioning and handover processes
  • Maintain accurate site documentation and reports
Qualifications
  • Proven experience as a Mechanical Site Manager on commercial or laboratory projects
  • Strong understanding of mechanical building services, including HVAC, pipework, and public health systems
  • Experience working with M&E contractors on large-scale projects
  • Excellent communication, coordination, and leadership skills
  • SMSTS and CSCS certification (preferred)
  • Ability to work to deadlines with a proactive, hands-on approach
  • Available to start January 2026
