Job summary

The University of Sheffield is seeking a Maintenance Plumber/Technician (G5) to perform planned and reactive mechanical maintenance across university buildings. You will work within the Engineering and Maintenance team, prioritise tasks per SLAs, and collaborate with contractors while ensuring health and safety compliance.

The role requires an apprenticeship in mechanical building services or equivalent experience, City & Guilds Level 3, and Gas Safe registration.

Overview

The Engineering and Maintenance team provide a reactive and planned programme of works for every building within the university, working in collaboration with other university departments and outside partners to deliver an outstanding, world-class service.

As part of a team of maintenance plumbers & technicians, use mechanical maintenance & plumbing skills to ensure effective delivery of the university’s maintenance function. Carry out the day to day planned and reactive maintenance of mechanical elements and supporting other disciplines.

At all times work in compliance with the University’s policies, current technical legislation and health and safety standards.

Main Duties And Responsibilities

• Carry out planned and reactive mechanical maintenance activities predominantly through testing, fault finding and repair on a range of services, installations, associated plant, appliances and systems. Complete jobs safely, ensuring procedures are followed correctly, and that own work is completed on time and at all times work in compliance with the University’s policies, current technical legislation and health and safety standards.
• Prioritise jobs in order of urgency, as directed by the supervisor. Draw upon depth of knowledge, skills, experience and expertise to deal with the job in hand. Make decisions on the methods to be used and the sequence of actions.
• Undertake mechanical maintenance of services using a range of tools and techniques: including central heating systems, mains cold water, gas services, domestic hot water, low pressure cold water, steam, compressed air, ground source heating systems etc. The work is split between planned and reactive maintenance.
• Liaise with contractors who are working on University premises to ensure they are carrying out work in accordance with required timescales and University Health and Safety standards. Provide detailed information and advice about how to tackle technical tasks, using in-depth knowledge of the University and its infrastructure.
• Liaise with and maintain good relationships with key contacts in University departments to let them know about work being undertaken and keep them up to date with progress.
• Responsible for reporting stock levels of consumables to enable planned and reactive maintenance to be achieved.
• Maintain personal tools, equipment and vehicles, taking responsibility for the safekeeping of these. Complete regular checks on vehicles to ensure it is in good condition.
• Respond to requests for assistance at the University outside normal working hours in accordance with the departments’ call-out procedures. The post will be required to participate in a formal on-call rota to provide emergency responses across the University Estate. Participation in this rota will be determined by the University in accordance with the on-call provisions.
• Work is received from the Mechanical Supervisor or from the Planon database. Jobs arrive with a response time indicated, according to pre-set Service Level Agreements (SLA’s), and the job holder is responsible for completing an initial investigation, if not the whole job itself, within the required timescale.
• As directed by the Supervisor, prioritise a number of jobs according to importance, taking into account the indicated SLA.
