Job Title: Mechanical Fitter - Buildings and Base Services
Location: HM Naval Base, Portsmouth (HMNBP)
Service Area: Service Delivery
Hours of Work: 37 Per week
As a Mechanical Maintenance Technician, you'll play a key role in delivering safe, professional, and efficient planned and reactive maintenance across a diverse range of equipment. From forklift trucks and cranes to trailers, portable generators, Manitou Rotary Telehandlers, and Charlatte tow trucks, you'll ensure everything runs smoothly and reliably.
You'll be expected to work confidently both independently and as part of a close-knit team, carrying out maintenance, repairs, and testing on mechanical systems, plant, and machinery. A solid understanding of KPIs is essential, as you'll be responsible for ensuring all tasks are completed within reporting boundaries and to the highest standards.
To thrive in this role, you'll bring a solid foundation in mechanical engineering, ideally having completed a mechanical apprenticeship or gained equivalent hands‑on experience backed by strong theoretical knowledge. You'll either hold or be working towards industry-recognised qualifications such as NVQ or City & Guilds, demonstrating your commitment to professional development.
Your toolkit will include proficiency with a wide range of hand tools and equipment, and you'll be confident in applying your skills to maintain and repair plant machinery, particularly forklift trucks and cranes. Fault finding and rectification will be second nature to you, and you'll be able to produce clear, detailed reports to support your work.
Additionally, you'll also be comfortable working with technical specifications and will have a sound understanding of safe systems of work, ensuring every task is carried out with precision and safety at the forefront.
Customer interaction is a vital part of the role, so you'll need to build and maintain positive relationships, managing expectations with professionalism and care. You'll also be part of a rostered on‑call team, providing support for Harbour Radar repairs during both normal hours and out‑of‑hours periods.
Adaptability is also key, where you'll need to stay alert to changing requirements and resource availability, providing regular updates to your Team Leader on progress, issues, or delays. Tasks will be assigned via a mobile application, so you'll use your device to manage and deliver work orders efficiently and effectively.
Applications are urged to apply prior to the advertising closing date of Thursday 30th October 2025 with a view of interviews scheduled to commence week commencing Monday 3rd November 2025. For all queries, please contact the Recruitment Team in the first instance who will advise accordingly.
