Sector and subsector: Engineering | Mechanical
Salary: Negotiable salary

The Role:

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Mechanical Estimator to join Glanua, a recognised leader in the water and wastewater industry. This role is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious professional with 5 to 10 years of experience who is ready to contribute to high value tendering activities across Uisce Éireann’s municipal programme and AMP8 frameworks with Thames Water, United Utilities and Yorkshire Water.

As a Mechanical Estimator, you will prepare accurate and well structured estimates for mechanical engineering works, ensuring that all proposals are technically sound, commercially robust and aligned with Glanua’s governance standards. You will work closely with design, project management and procurement teams to support the development of competitive, buildable and efficient solutions that meet client specifications.

You will play an important role in evaluating the buildability of designs, supporting material selection, and identifying innovation opportunities that enhance value for money. You will also support the early stages of tender development by providing indicative pricing, enabling clear optioneering and informed budgeting. Success in this role demands a strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles, practical knowledge of installation methods and a commitment to maintaining high standards of accuracy and professionalism.

This position offers an opportunity to deepen mechanical estimating expertise within a high performing tendering environment and to contribute directly to the delivery of complex, high profile projects across Ireland and the UK.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:
The main duties and responsibilities of the Mechanical Estimator are outlined as follows:
  • Prepare detailed and accurate mechanical estimates based on drawings, specifications and tender documentation.
  • Ensure estimates reflect appropriate levels of construction risk and comply with company guidelines and industry standards.
Participation in Design Development
  • Support the design development process by assessing buildability, installation methods, and material selection.
  • Provide indicative pricing during early tender stages to support optioneering and the identification of cost effective solutions.
Risk and Governance Compliance
  • Assist in ensuring all risk, governance and approval procedures are followed and fully documented.
  • Provide clear assumptions, exclusions and clarifications within pricing schedules.
  • Contribute to the development of tender preparation and construction programmes.
  • Support the preparation of staff schedules and resource plans that reflect project delivery needs.
Procurement Planning
  • Work with procurement teams to identify suitable suppliers and subcontractors and secure competitive quotations.
  • Prepare and issue enquiries for mechanical materials, equipment and subcontract services and evaluate responses for compliance and value.
Technical and Industry Awareness
  • Maintain an up to date understanding of mechanical engineering technologies, installation techniques and sector developments.
  • Apply this knowledge to improve the accuracy and competitiveness of mechanical estimates.
  • Assist in developing financial models for tenders and frameworks, including staff rates and mechanical cost structures.
  • Support internal price fix reviews with accurate information on mechanical cost drivers.
Cost Coding and Feedback
  • Use the standardised cost coding system to support cost capture and benchmarking.
  • Provide feedback that strengthens estimating tools, cost libraries and production rates.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
The main knowledge, skills and experience required of the Mechanical Estimator are outlined as follows:
  • 5 to 10 years of experience in mechanical estimating within the water, wastewater or wider construction sectors.
  • Demonstrated experience in preparing mechanical cost estimates for treatment plants, pumping stations or similar infrastructure.
  • Strong analytical and numerical skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Good understanding of mechanical engineering principles and construction methods.
  • Competence in estimating software, digital take off tools and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively across disciplines.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast paced environment.
What we offer you:
  • The opportunity to join an ambitious and growing organisation.
  • Monday to Friday working week finishing early on Fridays.
