Job description
Overview

Join Cavendish Nuclear as a Mechanical Engineering Degree Apprentice in Warrington. Over four years you will study for a BEng (Hons) in Professional Engineering (Product Design) while gaining hands-on experience on initiatives that support the safe delivery of nuclear new build and decommissioning projects.

Responsibilities
  • Work across the engineering lifecycle on nuclear projects, developing new technologies, maintaining essential systems, and extending vital infrastructure.
  • Gain hands-on experience with CAD, 3D modelling, mechanical calculations, and producing documentation to national and international standards.
  • Define design requirements, develop 3D CAD models, produce detailed drawings, carry out scoping calculations, prepare equipment specifications and technical reports.
  • Help manage plant and equipment obsolescence to ensure safety and reliability; support assembly, testing, and operational teams; resolve engineering queries and nonconformance issues.
  • Shadow and learn from experienced engineers; progress to more complex tasks across the design lifecycle.
Your education/training
  • Study towards Product Design and Development Engineer (Degree) Apprenticeship standard through the University of Lancashire.
  • Blended learning with three-day in-person block at semester start plus weekly online sessions.
  • Focus on materials science, CAD, systems integration, prototyping; aim to create fit-for-purpose solutions in regulated environments.
  • Upon successful completion, you will be awarded a BEng (Hons) in Professional Engineering (Product Design) and a Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship.
Future prospects
  • By apprenticeship end, become a Mechanical Engineer with salary exceeding £43,000.
  • Opportunity toward Incorporated Engineer registration; career progression via Babcock Role Framework.
What you’ll need
  • GCSEs: minimum five at grade C/4 or above, including Maths, English and Science, plus one of the following options.
  • 104 UCAS points from A Levels including Maths and Physics or another STEM subject at grade C
  • BTEC Extended Diploma: DMM in Engineering (must include Maths units)
  • Access course: 104 points with Maths and Physics or STEM credits
  • IB: 104 points with Maths and Physics or STEM at HL
  • T Level: Merit in engineering T-Level
  • IELTS: 6.0 overall with no component lower than 5.5
  • Security clearance and Trade Control restrictions may apply to apprenticeships.
