Job summary

Vulcain Engineering is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to lead mechanical discipline activities on a large, complex project within a highly regulated environment in the United Kingdom. You will interface with site teams, design functions, contractors, and regulators to support safe, compliant project execution.

The role emphasizes nuclear safety, environmental assessments, and effective stakeholder management across multiple disciplines.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Experience in system design, mechanical design, installation, and/or commissioning.
  • Experience in nuclear or highly regulated environments.
  • Knowledge of construction and installation on large-scale projects.
  • Understanding of Health & Safety legislation including CDM and Nuclear Site Licence.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management in site-based environments.
  • Ability to work independently and proactively identify and report issues.

  • Act as a key technical interface for mechanical queries from site contractors.
  • Provide engineering oversight to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Support the project team through technical assessment of contractor queries.
  • Carry out nuclear safety and environmental assessments.
  • Review design decisions to align with project strategy.
  • Coordinate input from other disciplines and external organisations.
  • Contribute to resolution of technical open points.
  • Identify and manage technical risks.
  • Maintain relationships with the Responsible Designer and stakeholders.

Job description

We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to join a large, complex engineering project within a highly regulated environment. This role is primarily focused on the mechanical discipline, while working closely with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders across site and design teams. You will be part of an integrated delivery team, interfacing with contractors, construction, quality, project management, and design functions to support safe, compliant, and effective project execution.

Job Responsibilities
  • Act as a key technical interface for mechanical-related queries from site contractors, including non-conformances, change requests, and exemption requests.
  • Provide engineering oversight to ensure compliance with nuclear safety and environmental regulations.
  • Support the integrated project team through technical assessment and resolution of contractor queries.
  • Carry out nuclear safety and environmental assessments and categorisation of engineering queries.
  • Review design and engineering decisions to ensure alignment with overall project strategy.
  • Coordinate technical input and support from other engineering disciplines and external organisations as required.
  • Contribute to the resolution and closure of technical open points.
  • Identify, assess, and manage technical risks.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with the Responsible Designer and wider engineering stakeholders.
Requirements
  • Degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Experience in system design, mechanical design, installation, and/or commissioning.
  • Proven experience applying multi-disciplinary engineering knowledge, ideally within the nuclear industry or other highly regulated environments.
  • Knowledge of construction and installation activities on large-scale projects.
  • Understanding of Health & Safety legislation, including CDM and Nuclear Site Licence requirements.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, particularly within a site-based environment.
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and proactively identify, elevate, and report issues.
