Job Description

The University of Manchester Facilities Maintenance and Compliance Unit are seeking to appoint a dynamic and experienced Mechanical Engineer.

We are looking for a candidate that can:

  • Support the Mechanical Engineering team in delivering quality mechanical/HVAC installations work across the University estate.
  • Develop working relationships with both internal/external designers, contractors, commissioning engineers and other project team members to ensure HVAC designs & installations comply with university requirements and are installed and commissioned correctly.
  • Manage and monitor all mechanical/HVAC installation work on site and produce reports as required, including monitoring costs against budget.

As an ideal candidate you will have:

  • Minimum of HND (Level 5 BTEC) in Building Services (or equivalent) together with substantial vocational experience.
  • An established track record and experience in a mechanical/HVAC construction environment.
  • Experience of working within a multi-disciplinary environment with technical staff and external contractors.
  • Experience of producing detailed technical specifications for the design and installation of HVAC services.
  • Experience of project management for the installation of HVAC services.
  • Experience of producing detailed technical reports and correspondence/communication.
  • Be proficient in clear oral communication.
  • Experience of working to tight deadlines.
  • Experience of monitoring, overseeing or managing HVAC commissioning activities.

Must be proficient and have a good understanding in:

  • Mechanical (HVAC) engineering regulations and guidance (i.e. CIBSE, BSRIA, BESA).
  • The Approved Code of Practice and Guidance for Legionella, L8.
  • Building Regulations.
  • Health and Safety Legislation (inc CDM Regulations 1995).
  • Water Fittings Regulations.
  • The Gas Safety Regulations.

Must be capable and physically fit enough to access all parts of the University's estate including working at height, working in confined spaces, plant rooms, tank rooms etc. This largely an active & physically demanding role with some desktop work.
