Job Summary

We are looking to expand our technical team within our Nuclear New Build division, by hiring 2 Mechanical Engineers with a speciality in Fluid Systems. The Mechanical Engineers will take ownership of their own packages of work within fluid systems (including fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and hydraulic systems, pumps, valves, pipework, heat exchangers). Representing the client side delivery services, this person will sit within the team who deliver overview and multi-disciplinary coordination in the areas of safety case justifications, configuration & change management, documentation management and technical reporting, whilst ensuring alignment to nuclear industry standards and QA processes within a nuclear environment.

Some of the main responsibilities of the Mechanical Engineer will include:

Responsibilities
  • Take responsibility for mechanical fluid systems deliverables within the client offices on UK nuclear new build projects (fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and hydraulic systems - pumps, valves, pipework, heat exchangers).
  • Review and manage system documentation – ensuring accuracy, consistency, and proper traceability.
  • Check P&IDs, as well as raise and validate design changes where required.
  • Assess, determine and manage justifications for safety cases.
  • Take ownership of full configuration management duties, including communicating and interfacing with multi‑disciplinary teams and stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with vendors and suppliers on the technical aspects of mechanical fluid systems topics.
  • Produce technical reports and provide technical input and support to any client office and site‑based activities when required.
  • Build strong working relationships with client stakeholders to ensure smooth project delivery.

This is a unique opportunity for you to directly influence the mechanical fluid systems scope for landmark nuclear projects, helping to shape infrastructure that will define the UK's energy future. It's a challenging, high‑impact position with long‑term stability and clear progression routes, alongside the chance to explore various frameworks across our nuclear portfolio throughout your career at Vulcain.

Qualifications
  • Extensive experience in design, analysis, quality assurance or safety cases, ideally with one or more of the following: pumps, valves, steam release systems, heat exchangers, demineralised & potable water systems.
  • A minimum Bachelor Degree in Mechanical, Process or Nuclear Engineering.
  • Demonstrable experience in a regulated environment such as Nuclear (desirable), Oil & Gas, Petrochemical, or similar.
  • Experience producing P&IDs, technical specifications, reports and system documentation, ideally alongside strong documentation and verification skills with excellent attention to technical detail and compliance.
  • Familiarity with industry codes, safety cases, standards and QA processes in regulated environments.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to interface with multi‑disciplinary teams and suppliers.
  • Experience with thermal‑hydraulic modelling, transient analysis, or CFD tools is advantageous.
  • Reside locally to Gloucestershire or be prepared to relocate, as this permanent role does not include travel expense coverage.
  • Visa sponsorship is not guaranteed and is assessed on a case‑by‑case basis, depending on role criticality and project needs. Many of our UK projects require high‑level security clearance, meaning we can often only consider candidates with an existing, indefinite right to work in the UK.
