Job summary

AtkinsRéalis is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to provide design and analysis support for nuclear decommissioning projects. You will work with cross-disciplinary teams across Whitehaven and Manchester, delivering 2D drawings, 3D models and technical calculations, while collaborating with safety and QA frameworks.

You will lead engineers and technicians, perform design checks and ensure timely, quality delivery in a flexible hybrid setup with possible site presence in West Cumbria.

Qualifications

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
• Chartership with a relevant institution or working towards Chartership.
• Experience in 3D CAD and mechanical design.
• Knowledge of digital tools (laser scanning, VR/AR/MR) to deliver engineering solutions.

Responsibilities

• Deliver engineering design solutions across full design lifecycle (2D drawings, 3D models, hand calculations, FEA).
• Lead project tasks and teams, detail-check work, ensure time and quality with QA processes.
• Prepare technical documentation and ensure compliance with safety and CDM regulations.

Job description

Are you a Mechanical Engineer with experience in engineering design/design analysis? Do you have experience in delivering solutions to technical problems? Are you looking for a new challenge in your career?

Your role

• As part of our Nuclear business you will work with a team of engineers to provide design and engineering support for a variety of projects and for a variety of clients; a good portion of our work is for clients in West Cumbria and within the wider nuclear decommissioning market.
• This work is delivered by our engineering teams based in Whitehaven and Manchester. This enables flexibility in where the role would be based; aware of the fact that projects may require a physical presence for a portion of time which is likely to be in West Cumbria (site visits, equipment testing & trialling, etc.).
• In the Mechanical Engineering team, we deliver design work from study phase to concept design and through to detail design. This is often within the nuclear decommissioning market but sometimes across other energy sectors such as renewables, oil & gas, and conventional power.
• Multi-disciplinary work is delivered in collaboration with our in‑house Civil & Structural, Electrical, Control & Instrumentation, and Environment and Waste Management teams.
• We also often support commissioning, installation, and more recently operation – all from an engineering standing.
• Within the role you will deliver engineering design solutions throughout the full design lifecycle, including preparation of 2D drawings, 3D models, hand calculations, finite element analysis and the supporting technical documentation.
• You will lead teams of engineers and technicians on project tasks as required, detail check the work of others and ensure that projects are delivered to time and quality and in accordance with the appropriate Quality Assurance (QA) processes.

About You

• You will be motivated and proactive with a willingness to learn and adapt.
• You'll be able to work both independently and as part of a team and possess good interpersonal skills with an ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
• You will be comfortable working remotely and within an office, dictated as and when by project, task, people/team and business needs.
• You will possess a good understanding of engineering principles, with experience in delivering solutions to technical problems, engineering design/design analysis, undertaking technical calculations & analysis, and 3D model/2D drawing production for manufacture.
• You will understand various technical, safety and legislative documentation, such as risk assessments, CDM regulations, method statements, UKCA Technical Files, etc.

You Will Also Possess The Following

• Degree, or other qualification, in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
• Chartership with the relevant institution or working towards Chartership.
• Experience in 3D Computer Aided Design.
• Knowledge and experience using digital tools to deliver engineering solutions (e.g., laser scanning, virtual and/or augmented reality, mixed reality).
