Mechanical Engineer

Purpose of the Role

As a Mechanical Engineer within our R&D department, you will design, prototype and validate mechanical components for new product releases, bespoke client projects and internal company systems within the fields of entertainment lasers and special effects.

You will create CAD/CAM files for in‑house production using our CNC laser cutter, milling machine, lathe and router, and manage outsourced fabrication when required. You will also support prototype testing, 3D printing, and documentation throughout the development cycle. This role reports directly to the Technical Director.

You will be working in a fast‑paced international business across multiple time zones, therefore it is important that you have the following Skills and Experience:

  • Ability to write clear and comprehensive technical documentation
  • Strong engineering calculation and analysis skills for material selection and design verification
  • Able to work independently or as part of a team, managing workloads to meet deadlines
  • Highly analytical with exceptional problem‑solving abilities and strong attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information clearly
  • 2–5 years experience in a mechanical engineering role
  • Proficiency with CAM software producing toolpaths for a range of different CNC machines (ideally Autodesk Fusion 360)
  • 2–5 years experience using CAD software such as AutoCAD or Fusion 360 to create 3D models and 2D technical drawings
Responsibilities
  • Designing and documenting mechanical parts using CAD, including sheet metal and milled components for equipment enclosures, optical mounts, electronic component housings and motion‑drive assemblies
  • Taking ownership of full product mechanical design, including overall product architecture, mechanical layout, manufacturability considerations and integration with electronic and optical systems
  • Creating and maintaining Bills of Materials (BOMs) for all products, ensuring accuracy throughout the development process and into production
  • Sourcing, costing and maintaining pricing for components, working with suppliers to ensure cost‑effective and reliable parts procurement
  • Working with the fabrication team to set up, validate and optimise CNC machining programs
  • Coordinating with external fabricators to ensure components and assemblies are produced accurately and delivered on schedule
  • Producing prototype and production components using in‑house 3D printers
  • Researching new manufacturing technologies and processes to drive innovation and cost‑effective design
  • Assembling and testing prototype products and systems
  • Supporting assembly of production units when required
  • Creating assembly instructions, manufacturing guides and documentation for external suppliers and internal staff
