The role

As a Mechanical Engineer, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. You’ll work on design investigations, equipment modifications, and problem‑solving activities that make a tangible difference to performance and reliability. This is your opportunity to apply your expertise in a dynamic environment, develop your skills, and contribute to projects that matter.

Day-to-day, you’ll be part of our UK In‑Service Support Technical Team, delivering engineering solutions for submarine weapon systems across the Vanguard and Astute classes. This is a role that’s out of the ordinary — you’ll help maintain and enhance systems that underpin the UK’s Continuous At Sea Deterrent (CASD), ensuring operational readiness and national security.

  • Solving operational defects and resolving end‑user and dockyard queries within tight deadlines
  • Providing specialist on‑site and on‑platform support as Technical Authority
  • Undertaking design modifications and investigations to improve equipment performance
  • Reviewing and sentencing manufacturing and supplier concessions
  • Producing detailed reports and maintaining technical documentation

This role is full time, 37 hours per week, provides hybrid working arrangements and may require travel to other parts of the UK.

Essential experience of the Mechanical Engineer
  • Broad mechanical engineering knowledge
  • Understanding of high‑integrity engineering drawings and design (defence, oil & gas, nuclear, aerospace)
  • Familiarity with manufacturing techniques, inspection methods, and quality standards
  • Strong problem‑solving skills with clear communication abilities
  • Experience in system integration, defect investigation, or concession sentencing (advantageous)
