Job summary

Wallace Hind Selection is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer for Bedford-area machinery projects, from concept through to completion, with hands-on shop floor involvement.

You will work on NPD and reengineering projects, using SolidWorks and DFMA. A background in mechanical design and BOM knowledge is expected; the role offers a permanent, hands-on engineering path.

Qualifications

• Experienced Mechanical Design Engineer educated to likely have an HND or B.ENG in Mechanical Engineering.
• Experience working on design projects from concept through to completion.
• SolidWorks used as primary 3D modeling package; involvement with production and test (DfMA).

You’re a Mechanical Engineer first and a Design Engineer second. As our Mechanical Design Engineer, you’ll work on R&D projects from concept through to completion, not just in the design office but hands‑on with production and machinery testing. You don’t want to just sit in front of a computer; you want to broaden your horizons in a smaller business where you can make a real difference. Based in Bedford, we develop special purpose converting machinery for a variety of industry sectors.

BASIC SALARY: up to £41,000 dependent on your relevant experience

JOB DESCRIPTION: Mechanical Engineer, Design Engineer – Machinery, Industrial, R&D

Reporting to our Engineering Manager, as our Mechanical Design Engineer you’ll be involved from a variety of projects from the get‑go. Our projects can range from machinery modifications right through to blank page concept.

Rather than just being confined to a design office, you’ll be encouraged to be customer‑facing, building on your project experience and working closely with the team on the shop floor in production and test.

Projects will vary from NPD to reengineering solutions, low batch, high volume and next generation innovation. You will need the ability to juggle several projects at different stages, which will challenge you as a Mechanical Design Engineer. Innovation and quality are at the core of what we do here.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES: Mechanical Engineer, Design Engineer – Machinery, Industrial, R&D

As our Mechanical Design Engineer, you’ll be working on several projects at any one time (2-3), at different stages with different engineering challenges.

Your main duties will include:

• Detailed mechanical design of new machines from cradle to grave
• Re‑engineer existing machinery to enhance design, manufacturing efficiency, durability, cost down and weight etc
• Prototype testing
• Internal stakeholder management with production

YOUR BACKGROUND: Mechanical Engineer, Design Engineer – Machinery, Industrial, R&D

You’ll be an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer educated to likely have an HND or B.ENG in Mechanical Engineering.

You will also have experience of some or all the following:

• Working on design projects from concept through to completion
• Competent using SolidWorks as your primary 3D modeling package
• Worked closely with production and test (DfMA)
• BOM’s, materials selection to include stainless steel, aluminum and mild steel
