Mechanical Design Engineer

Full-time Permanent, Up to £50,000 DOE
Location: North Gloucestershire (between Cheltenham & Tewkesbury)

We are recruiting on behalf of a well‑established and fast‑growing automation and engineering business seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join their expanding design team. This is an excellent opportunity for a creative and technically skilled engineer with a strong background in bespoke automation machinery design, including complex sub‑assemblies, conveyors, and special‑purpose machinery. You’ll be involved from concept through to completion developing innovative mechanical solutions that integrate seamlessly into fully automated systems. Working with a close‑knit team of engineers, you’ll design, detail, and deliver projects that genuinely make an impact in modern manufacturing.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and develop new and existing components and assemblies for custom automation systems
• Work from concept to detailed 3D design using Autodesk Inventor
• Produce Bills of Materials (BoMs) and technical documentation
• Support site layout design and contribute to project reviews
• Liaise with suppliers and internal engineering teams throughout the design lifecycle
• Ensure designs meet performance, quality, and cost requirements
• Support testing, build, and commissioning stages where required

Essential Skills & Experience

• 5+ years’ experience in the design of industrial automation machinery or special‑purpose equipment
• Strong working knowledge of Autodesk Inventor (able to hit the ground running)
• Proven experience designing bespoke machines, conveyors, or complex sub‑assemblies
• Excellent communication and organisational skills
• Confident producing design documentation and collaborating cross‑functionally
• Degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering preferred
• Eligible to work and live in the UK
• Must have own transport (rural site location)
