Job description

Straight-Line Group are currently hiring a Mechanical Design Engineer to be based in Walsall.

As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you'll take ownership of the end-to-end design process for complex mechanical systems. You'll ensure that all designs comply with international standards, including ASME III, ASME VIII, PD 5500, and BS EN 12952, and are delivered to meet both performance and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop pressure vessels, heat exchanges, and pipework using 3D CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD).
  • Carry out stress analysis, material selection, and technical calculations to validate designs.
  • Create accurate and detailed technical drawings and manufacturing documentation.
  • Collaborate with project, production, and QA teams to deliver efficient, high-quality solutions.
  • Evaluate and optimise existing designs for cost-effectiveness and manufacturability.
  • Ensure adherence to all relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Maintain comprehensive design documentation and records throughout the project lifecycle.
Requirements
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Proven experience designing pressure vessels, heat exchangers, or pressure pipework.
  • In-depth knowledge of ASME III, ASME VIII, PD 5500, BS EN 12952.
  • Proficient in SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or other 3D CAD tools.
  • Strong understanding of material selection and mechanical stress analysis.
  • Excellent communication, organisation, and teamwork abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple design projects to deadline.
  • Eligible for UK Government security clearance.
  • Experience in power generation, oil and gas, chemical, or energy industries.
  • Familiarity with FEA (Finite Element Analysis) tools.
  • Chartered Engineer status or working towards professional registration (IMechE, IED).

Salary - £45,000 to £50,000 + benefits package.
