Overview

Mechanical Design Engineer - 2D & 3D CAD / Machinery Design

Location: Newhaven, East Sussex

Salary: Up to £35,000 per annum (depending on experience)

Our client, a growing manufacturer of bespoke mechanical machinery and automation systems, is looking for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join their expanding engineering team in Newhaven. This is an excellent opportunity for a creative and detail-oriented designer to work on a range of challenging projects — from concept through to manufacture and installation.

Responsibilities
  • Support the wider Design Team in delivering accurate, high-quality engineering drawings and documentation.
  • Produce working designs, detailed drawings, and parts lists for the Production team.
  • Generate purchase item lists for the Purchasing Manager to support procurement.
  • Liaise directly with customers to issue drawings for approval and manage communication via email and phone.
  • Create and maintain Operation & Maintenance (O&M) manuals for customers.
  • Prepare Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) for the installation team.
  • Produce design P&IDs and general arrangement drawings to support project delivery.
  • Work across multiple projects simultaneously, managing time and priorities effectively.
  • Attend customer sites when required for site surveys, installation support, commissioning, or to assist the sales team.
Skills & Experience
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in a Mechanical Design Engineer role within machinery, fabrication, or a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong proficiency in both 2D and 3D CAD software (e.g. SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or Inventor).
  • Knowledge of P&IDs, mechanical systems, and production documentation.
  • Ability to produce clear, accurate designs and communicate effectively with internal teams and customers.
  • Computer literate with good working knowledge of Word, Excel, and PDF editing tools.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects at once.
  • Full, clean UK driving licence.
  • Must be legally permitted to work in the UK (any overseas travel restrictions should be declared upon application).
