Overview

Job title: Mechanical Design Engineer
Job Type: Contract
IR35 Status: Inside IR35
Start date: Subject to clearance
Duration: 12 Month Rolling Contract
Pay rate: £45-55 per hour umbrella (depending on experience)
Location: Preston, Lancashire
Working: 5 Days onsite (4 days after 6 months)
Hours of work: 37-40 Hours Per Week

Responsibilities
  • Carry out design changes to existing facilities and contribute to the design of new-build structures on a Nuclear Licensed Site. Deliver mechanical engineering designs in line with defined standards, regulatory requirements, and internal design control procedures. Complete assigned work packages with a focus on quality, safety, and adherence to project timelines.
  • Provide support across the full design lifecycle—from initial concept and development through to final production and handover.
  • Prepare equipment specifications, initiate and evaluate tenders, produce detailed designs (including drawings and supporting documents), and generate commissioning and handover documentation.
  • Review and validate design work, and oversee junior team members such as mechanical designers and draughtspeople.
  • Provide Intelligent Customer oversight, ensuring quality and scope compliance for work subcontracted to external design firms.
Qualifications
  • Experience of working within multidiscipline teams engaged in mechanical engineering design activities associated with the modification of existing/new chemical process plants or material handling equipment.
  • Producing and working to design governance documentation/procedures, such as Design Quality Plans, Design Risk Assessments, Design Reviews, etc.
  • Experience with design software tools such as AutoCAD, Inventor, Revit, etc.
  • Knowledge and experience in the responsibilities placed on Designers under the CDM Regulations 2015.
  • Suitably qualified and experienced (HNC/degree) in producing Mechanical designs in a Design Office environment.
Helpful (advantageous) experience
  • Experience of producing designs for chemical plant environments including associated mechanical services.
  • Experience of producing designs for nuclear facilities.
  • Experience of piping and vessel design.
Security / Eligibility

UK National Security Vetting Status - All candidates must be Eligible to obtain BPSS Clearance.
