This is an opportunity for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join a growing and reputable building services consultancy based in Nottingham. Mechanical Design Engineer Role Overview

We are looking for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to play a key role in delivering high-quality mechanical engineering solutions across a range of building services projects. Ideally, the successful candidate will be a proactive team player, confident in leading project delivery and mentoring junior staff.

Working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary environment, you will consistently develop mechanical services strategies, undertake calculations, supervise design production, and liaise with clients and contractors. In addition, the role includes conducting technical reviews, overseeing quality assurance, and ensuring full compliance with all relevant standards and regulations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead mechanical design work on a range of building services projects, from concept through to completion.
  • Undertake feasibility studies, surveys, and site inspections.
  • Prepare load calculations, utility applications, and detailed technical designs.
  • Ensure mechanical systems are designed in line with relevant legislation, design guides, British Standards, and Building Regulations.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams including architects, structural engineers, and electrical engineers.
  • Attend design team and client meetings to represent the mechanical discipline.
  • Supervise and mentor junior and graduate engineers, supporting their development.
  • Review contractor and supplier technical submissions and ensure integration into the design.
  • Monitor quality control of mechanical documentation and ensure consistent technical standards.
  • Support bid preparation and business development activity where required.
Essential Skills & Experience
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in mechanical building services design.
  • Strong knowledge of UK building regulations, British Standards, and CIBSE design guides.
  • Proficiency in design software such as AutoCAD, Revit (MEP), and IES or Hevacomp.
  • Experience with specification writing (e.g. NBS) and preparing tender packages.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage workload across multiple projects and meet deadlines.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Chartered Engineer status or working towards Chartership (CEng) with CIBSE or IMechE.
  • Experience working in consultancy environments on multidisciplinary projects.
  • Familiarity with BIM Level 2 workflows.
