TipTopJob are recruiting an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer near Burton-on-Trent, commutable from Derby, Lichfield and Burton. The role covers design, development and detailing of mechanical systems for locomotives, with a focus on safety, manufacturability and reliability.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • At least 4 years in mechanical design in locomotive/heavy machinery/transport equipment.
  • Proficient in 3D CAD software (Inventor/ SolidWorks/ CATIA/ Creo).
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed mechanical designs and 3D models for locomotives and components.
  • Produce accurate drawings, specifications, and documentation for manufacturing.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including manufacturing, electrical, and service.
  • Perform design calculations, stress analysis and simulations to validate integrity.
  • Support design reviews, change control, and material/method selection to optimize cost and quality.
  • Resolve design issues arising during production, testing, or service.
  • Keep abreast of industry standards and locomotive engineering trends.
  • Contribute to CI initiatives, design efficiency, standardization, and innovation.

Our client has been established for almost a century and are market leaders in the design and manufacture of bespoke rail solutions for supply across the globe, and as a result of continued success and exciting plans for the future, are now seeking to recruit an experienced and enthusiastic Mechanical Design Engineer to join their design and development team.

Tasked with undertaking the design, development, and technical detailing of mechanical systems and components allied to the locomotive sector, the role ensures that designs meet functional, safety, manufacturability, and quality requirements, and will necessitate close collaboration with the manufacturing, operations and project teams to support new build, refurbishment, and aftermarket initiatives.

Core responsibilities for this varied and unique Mechanical Design Engineer opportunity based near Burton:on:Trent will include (but not be limited to):

  • Developing detailed mechanical designs and 3D models for locomotives, components, and associated systems in line with project requirements.
  • Producing accurate technical drawings, specifications, and documentation for manufacturing and assembly.
  • Collaborating with cross:functional teams including manufacturing, electrical engineering, and service to ensure designs are feasible, safe, and cost:effective.
  • Performing design calculations, stress analysis and simulations to validate mechanical integrity and performance.
  • Supporting design reviews, change control, and engineering approval processes, and assisting in the selection of materials, components, and manufacturing methods to optimize cost, quality, and reliability.
  • Resolving design issues arising during production, testing, or service.
  • Keeping abreast of industry trends, standards, and best practices in mechanical design and locomotive engineering.
  • Contributing to CI initiatives, including design efficiency, standardization, and innovation.

It is envisaged the successful Mechanical Design Engineer candidate will be degree qualified or above in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline and demonstrate at least 4 years; experience in mechanical design gained within a locomotive, heavy machinery or transportation equipment environment. You will be skilled in the use of 3D CAD software (Inventor, SolidWorks, CATIA, or Creo) and engineering drawing standards with strong knowledge of mechanical systems, materials, and manufacturing processes, experience with stress analysis, FEA, or other engineering simulation tools and excellent problem:solving, analytical, and organizational skills.

You will possess excellent communication and teamwork skills at all levels with the ability to work effectively across various departments, with a high level of attention to detail and commitment to high:quality engineering standards, able to manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively with an innovative mindset focussed on practical and cost:effective solutions.
