Job summary

Orion Group in Inverness seeks an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join its Technical Development team. You will drive development of new and existing products from concept through detailed engineering, testing and production, working with production, quality, purchasing and sales to ensure safety, compliance and customer satisfaction.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Experience in mechanical design and product development.
  • Ability to read, interpret and produce engineering drawings.
  • Strong understanding of engineering principles and design processes.
  • Competent IT skills including Microsoft Office.
  • Good time-management and organisational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Define and develop product requirements and engineering specifications.
  • Evaluate design concepts and select effective engineering solutions.
  • Carry out detailed mechanical design work and engineering calculations.
  • Develop innovative design solutions for new and existing products.
  • Produce and maintain engineering drawings and document control.
  • Undertake modelling, simulation and testing to validate designs.
  • Maintain technical documentation for production and servicing.
  • Prepare technical manuals and product literature.
  • Support product development, production testing and reporting.
  • Identify opportunities to improve manufacturing methods and processes.
  • Prepare and maintain Bills of Materials for new/modified products.
  • Support development of project programmes, budgets and technical plans.
  • Ensure designs comply with standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct design reviews and assess risks of changes.
  • Collaborate with Production, Quality, Purchasing, Sales, suppliers and customers.

About the role

We are recruiting on behalf of a leading engineering and manufacturing business based in Inverness for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join their Technical Development team.

This is an excellent opportunity for a mechanically minded engineer to play a key role in the development of new and existing products, taking designs from initial concept through detailed engineering, testing and production. You'll work closely with teams across engineering, production, quality, purchasing and sales to ensure products are safe, compliant, commercially viable and meet customer expectations.

The role would suit someone who enjoys solving engineering problems, developing practical products and seeing their designs progress from concept through to manufacture and installation.

As Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for supporting the design, development and continuous improvement of a diverse range of engineering products.

Responsibilities
  • Defining and developing product requirements and engineering specifications.
  • Evaluating design concepts and contributing to the selection of effective engineering solutions.
  • Carrying out detailed mechanical design work, including engineering calculations.
  • Developing innovative and practical design solutions for new and existing products.
  • Producing and maintaining accurate engineering drawings, including drawing revisions and document control.
  • Undertaking modelling, simulation and product testing to validate designs.
  • Developing and maintaining technical documentation to support production, servicing and customer use.
  • Preparing and updating technical manuals and other external product documentation.
  • Supporting product development, production testing and reporting.
  • Identifying opportunities to improve manufacturing methods and production processes.
  • Preparing and maintaining Bills of Materials (BOMs) for new and modified products.
  • Supporting the development of project programmes, budgets and technical plans.
  • Ensuring designs comply with relevant engineering standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Conducting engineering design reviews and assessing the risks associated with product changes.
  • Working closely with Production, Quality, Purchasing, Sales, suppliers and customers.
  • Providing technical input into product literature, website content and sales support materials.
  • Acting as a technical point of reference for colleagues and supporting the development of engineering processes and procedures.
  • Visiting customer sites and travelling as required.
  • Maintaining clear, accurate and concise engineering records.
  • Supporting the wider business with other engineering and product development activities as required.

We're looking for an engineer with a strong mechanical design background who can combine sound engineering principles with a practical, solutions-focused approach.

Essential requirements
  • Degree qualified, or equivalent qualification/experience, in Mechanical Engineering or a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Previous experience in mechanical design and product development.
  • Ability to read, interpret and produce engineering drawings.
  • Good understanding of engineering principles, design processes and relevant software systems.
  • Competent IT skills, including Microsoft Office.
  • Strong organisational and time-management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A proactive approach, with the ability to use initiative and work effectively with limited supervision.
  • Willingness to travel and occasionally work away from home.
Desirable
  • Experience or knowledge of the aquaculture industry.
  • Knowledge of offshore or marine engineering environments.
  • Experience working with manufactured products from concept through to production.
  • Experience supporting or mentoring junior engineers.
  • A valid UK driving licence
