A specialist Heavy Fabrication and Engineering company in Newton Abbot is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer. The ideal candidate will have experience in mechanical design, particularly with steel structures, and proficiency in 3D CAD software. Responsibilities include designing mechanical components and producing detailed drawings. This permanent position offers a salary range of GBP 30,000 to GBP 40,000 plus benefits.

Qualifications

  • Experience in mechanical design, ideally within steel structures, fabrication, or industrial equipment.
  • Understanding of materials, tolerances, and machining principles.
  • Ability to read and produce detailed engineering drawings.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop steel-based mechanical components and assemblies.
  • Produce detailed 2D and 3D drawings, fabrication details, and BOMs.
  • Work closely with the fabrication and production teams to ensure manufacturability.

Overview

JOB: Mechanical Design Engineer

LOCATION: Newton Abbot

TERM: Permanent

SALARY: GBP 30,000 to GBP 40,000 per annum (plus benefits)

My client is a specialist Heavy Fabrication and Engineering company providing bespoke solutions across a range of industries. They are looking to expand their design team by taking on a Mechanical Design Engineer to work at their site in Newton Abbot.

Experience working with Structural/Tekla Steel is desired, but not a necessity.

The Mechanical Design Engineer will ideally have the following attributes:

  • Experience in mechanical design, ideally within steel structures, fabrication, or industrial equipment
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD software (SolidWorks, Inventor, or similar)
  • A relevant Engineering qualification (BEng, MEng, HND, HNC, or equivalent)
  • Good knowledge of manufacturing and fabrication processes
  • Understanding of materials, tolerances, and machining principles
  • Strong problem:solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to read and produce detailed engineering drawings
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities
  • A proactive and organised approach to project work
Responsibilities
  • Designing and developing steel-based mechanical components and assemblies
  • Producing detailed 2D and 3D drawings, fabrication details, and BOMs
  • Working closely with the fabrication and production teams to ensure manufacturability
  • Liaising with clients and suppliers to ensure technical requirements are met
  • Supporting the full lifecycle of projects, from concept through to installation
  • Assisting with design improvements and cost reduction initiatives
  • Ensuring all designs meet safety, quality, and industry standards
