Job description

Mechanical Design Engineer. Salary: Up to £45,000 (DOE). Working hours: Mon–Thu 8:30–5:15, Fri 8:30–1:00. Hybrid/WFH. 37.5 hours/week.

This growing UK business supplies products globally across sectors like naval defence, offshore energy, marine research, and environmental monitoring. With over 50 staff, in-house manufacturing, and significant new investment, they started 2025 with their strongest order book to date.

Role

As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you'll be responsible for full-lifecycle product design—from concept through to test. You'll lead the design of complex mechanical housings, jigs, and tooling using SolidWorks (with PDM), while working closely with suppliers, production teams, and customers.

Responsibilities
  • Designing and detailing complex parts and assemblies
  • Working with steel, bronze, aluminium and specialist plastics
  • Creating 2D and 3D drawings, BOMs and work instructions
  • Supporting testing and validation (including on-site testing in a lake!)
  • Liaising with suppliers and internal departments to meet technical requirements
The Person
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in mechanical design, ideally in fabrication, machined parts or precision components
  • Strong SolidWorks skills, including PDM
  • A good understanding of mechanical materials and manufacturing processes
  • Comfortable leading small projects and contributing to cross-functional teams
  • Knowledge of sonar or marine equipment is a bonus, but not essential
