Job summary

Windracers Ltd is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to contribute to large fixed-wing UAV systems used in logistics and defence missions. You will design aircraft structures, mechanisms and subsystems, translating requirements into lightweight, manufacturable designs and supporting the full development lifecycle from concept to flight.

Applicants should have a degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, 3+ years in aerospace/UAV design, and strong CAD skills (SolidWorks, SolidWorks PDM).

Qualifications

• Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or related field.
• 3+ years mechanical design experience in aerospace/UAV/defence.
• Strong CAD skills, SolidWorks preferred.
• Experience producing drawings and BOMs.
• Knowledge of machining and sheet metal fabrication.
• Right to work in the UK and willingness to travel.

Responsibilities

• Develop 3D CAD models and 2D drawings for UAV components and assemblies.
• Produce manufacturing documentation, BOMs and specifications.
• Support prototype builds, ground and flight testing, and improvements.
• Support lifecycle designs, change management and scalable manufacturing.
• Contribute to design reviews, communicating decisions and risks.

Job description

We are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to work on developing our large fixed- wing UAV systems, operating in real logistics and defence missions, where reliability, efficiency and practical engineering matter.

In this role you will design aircraft structures, mechanisms and mechanical subsystems, translating system requirements into lightweight, manufacturable designs. You will support the full development lifecycle — from concept design through prototyping, testing and production — working closely with multidisciplinary teams across engineering, manufacturing and flight operations. We’re looking for engineers who enjoy solving real engineering problems and want to see their designs built, tested and flown. The role suits someone who is comfortable working across design, prototyping and manufacturing, and who thrives in a collaborative development environment.

Responsibilities/Tasks

• Develop 3D CAD models and 2D manufacturing drawings for UAV componentsand assemblies including structural elements, payload integration solutions and mechanical subsystems.
• Produce manufacturing documentation, BOMs and technical specifications forin-house and external manufacturing.
• Support prototype builds, ground testing and flight testing, troubleshootingmechanical issues and implementing improvements.
• Support full lifecycle of designs, change management, manufacturing at scaleand operations.
• Contribute to design reviews, clearly communicating engineering decisions, trade-offs and risks.

Skills/Knowledge

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related discipline.
• 3+ years mechanical design experience in aerospace, UAV, defence or relevant sector (vehicles, automotive/motorsport).
• Strong CAD skills, strong preference for SolidWorks and SolidWorks PDM.
• Experience with structural analysis / FEA of components and assemblies is desirable but not necessary.
• Experience designing lightweight structural assemblies, mechanical systems, and payload integration activities.
• Experience producing engineering drawings, BOMs and manufacturing documentation.
• Knowledge of manufacturing processes such as machining, sheet metal fabrication, bonded or riveted assemblies (composites experience is advantageous).
• Right to work within the UK
• Ability to travel abroad to EU and non-EU territories
• Vetting and security clearance (as required by role, location or client)
