You will be involved in the design of materials handling systems, taking projects from concept through to detailed design and manufacture. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in materials handling design and proficiency in SolidWorks. Mechanical Design Engineer - Materials Handling

📍 Location: South Yorkshire
💷 Salary: £45,000 - £50,000 per annum (DOE)
🕓 Hours: Monday-Thursday 8:30am-5:00pm, Friday 8:30am-3:30pm (flexi)
📅 Employment Type: Permanent, Full-time

The Opportunity

Due to continued growth and a strong pipeline of upcoming projects, the company is seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join their design department.

You’ll be involved in the mechanical design of bulk and process materials handling systems — taking projects from concept through to detailed design and manufacture. This is a hands‑on, technically engaging role that requires creativity, precision, and a strong understanding of mechanical systems within industrial environments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the concept design and detailed design of materials handling systems, including conveyors, structural frameworks, gantries, stairways, walkways and supporting steelwork.
  • Prepare detailed 3D models and drawings using SolidWorks.
  • Design for fabrication and welding, ensuring compliance with relevant engineering and safety standards.
  • Apply knowledge of CDM Regulations throughout the design and project lifecycle.
  • Produce layout drawings and plant designs, incorporating process plant and pipework elements where required.
  • Work collaboratively with manufacturing, installation and project teams to ensure design intent and quality are achieved.
  • Provide technical support to both internal teams and clients.
About You

To be successful in this role, you’ll bring a strong background in materials handling engineering and experience taking designs from concept through to manufacture.

Essential Skills & Experience
  • Proven experience in bulk or process materials handling design.
  • Proficient user of SolidWorks 3D CAD.
  • Knowledge of structural steel, fabrication and welding principles.
  • Understanding of CDM Regulations and design safety responsibilities.
  • Strong communication and problem‑solving skills.
  • Confident, motivated and capable of taking a lead role within the design department.
Qualifications
  • HNC/HND in Mechanical Engineering.
  • City & Guilds / NVQ Level 3 in mechanical, fabrication or welding disciplines (desirable).
