Job summary

Osborne Appointments is seeking a Mechanical Assembler in Hitchin, Hertfordshire. The role involves hands-on assembly of mechanical components and equipment used in industrial water treatment systems, with in-house training and clear progression paths.

You will fit and connect piping, pumps, valves and related components, using hand and power tools while following engineering drawings and instructions. Excellent attention to detail is essential.

Qualifications

• Previous experience in mechanical assembly, mechanical fitting, engineering, plumbing or a similar hands-on role.
• Confident using hand tools and power tools.
• Ability to read engineering drawings (beneficial but training provided).
• Experience with pipework, pumps, valves or mechanical systems advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Assemble mechanical components and equipment used within industrial water treatment systems.
• Fit and connect pipes, pumps, valves, brackets, gauges and associated components.
• Use hand tools and power tools to complete mechanical assembly and fitting work.
• Position, align and secure components to ensure accurate assembly.
• Follow engineering drawings, technical information and instructions where required.
• Assist with the preparation and installation of mechanical systems and equipment.
• Identify and resolve basic assembly issues, escalating more complex problems where necessary.
• Work alongside the wider engineering team to meet quality and production requirements.
• Maintain a clean, organised and safe workshop environment.

Duties of a Mechanical Assembler:

• Assemble mechanical components and equipment used within industrial water treatment systems.
• Fit and connect pipes, pumps, valves, brackets, gauges and associated components.

What we would like from you:

• Previous experience in mechanical assembly, mechanical fitting, engineering, plumbing or a similar hands‑on role.
• Confident using hand tools and power tools.
• A practical approach to building, fitting, connecting or assembling components.
• Good attention to detail and a commitment to producing quality work.
• The ability to follow instructions and work safely within a workshop environment.
• Experience reading engineering drawings would be beneficial but is not essential, as training can be provided.
• Experience with pipework, pumps, valves, machinery or mechanical systems would be advantageous.
• Familiarity with ABS, PVC-U or other plastic pipework and fittings would be beneficial but is not essential.
• Previous experience within manufacturing, industrial engineering or water treatment would be an advantage.
• A willingness to learn, develop new skills and work as part of a team.
