Job summary

PeoplePlus UK is recruiting a dedicated Functional Skills Tutor to deliver City & Guilds qualifications at HMYOI Werrington. You will teach Maths and English to cohorts up to 12, using inclusive methods and digital resources to enhance accessibility and motivation.

You will create ILPs, conduct assessments, and prepare learners for exams, while promoting progression, rehabilitation and employability. Prior experience in prison education is desirable; safeguarding and EIF knowledge is valued.

Qualifications

• Teaching qualification at Level 5 or above (PGCE, Cert Ed, DTLLS or equivalent), or willingness to work towards one.
• Strong lesson planning, classroom management and learner engagement skills.
• Experience with BKSB or similar diagnostic tools.
• Knowledge of EIF and safeguarding obligations.
• Experience in prison education or adult/further education.

Responsibilities

• Deliver Functional Skills Maths qualifications from Entry 1 to Level 2.
• Conduct initial assessments and use BKSB diagnostics to identify learner starting points.
• Develop and maintain Individual Learning Plans (ILPs).
• Create engaging lesson plans that support learner progression and achievement.
• Motivate and inspire learners to reach their full potential.
• Support learners with additional learning needs and reasonable adjustments.
• Monitor progress and prepare learners for examinations and assessments.
• Promote literacy, numeracy and reading for pleasure across the prison environment.
• Work collaboratively with prison staff, support practitioners and employability teams to support positive learner outcomes.

About the Role

As a Functional Skills Tutor, you will deliver engaging and inclusive lessons to groups of up to 12 learners, supporting individuals with a wide range of educational backgrounds, learning needs and abilities. You will use innovative teaching approaches, adaptive learning techniques and digital resources to make Maths and English relevant, accessible and enjoyable.

You will:

• Ability to adapt teaching methods to meet diverse learner needs.
• Excellent communication, organisational and administrative skills.
• A commitment to safeguarding, equality, inclusion and learner success.
• Experience within prison education, adult learning or further education.
• Experience using BKSB or similar diagnostic tools.
• Knowledge of Ofsted's Education Inspection Framework (EIF).
• Internal Quality Assurance qualification (or willingness to work towards).
