Job summary

Special Melted Products Ltd in Sheffield is offering a Level 3 Materials Technician apprenticeship. You’ll gain hands-on experience across chemistry, mechanical testing and metallography while earning £8.08 per hour and 40-hour weeks.

During the 20‑month programme you’ll work with testing, heat treatment, and data analysis, progressing through pay increases and a clear pathway to a long‑term career at SMP. The role includes 33 days of annual leave, private healthcare and CPD opportunities.

Qualifications

• 18+ years old required.
• Not in full‑time education.
• Have lived in the UK for at least 3 years.
• Have the right to work in the UK.

Responsibilities

• Carry out metallurgical testing including tensile, hardness, and microstructure evaluations.
• Ensure testing is performed in accordance with the relevant procedures.
• Evaluate results against the applicable specification.
• Maintain and calibrate testing equipment prior to use.
• Carry out heat treatment in line with specifications.
• Maintain and calibrate furnaces as required.
• Work safely and participate in safety initiatives.
• Provide timely results aligned with planned dates.
• Communicate effectively with team and supervisors.
• Support improvements to procedures and equipment to boost efficiency.
