Job summary

A well-established residential developer in the United Kingdom seeks a Buyer to manage cost control and procurement for construction materials. The ideal candidate will bring a minimum of 3 years of experience in purchasing procedures and construction techniques, coupled with strong mathematical skills and attention to detail. Responsibilities include supporting the Commercial team, producing material budgets, and liaising with suppliers. This role offers a salary of up to £55k plus benefits, including flexible working options and opportunities for progression.

Qualifications

Overview

Buyer

New opportunity to work within a buying team for a well established residential developer based in North London / Home Counties.

Purpose of the Role

You will provide a full range of cost control, forecasting and financial reporting duties on all aspects of materials supply and plant for construction work within your region. Working closely with the wider Commercial team, you will be responsible for the performance of the sites within your control.

What skills and experience are essential to do this job?
  • A minimum of 3 years\' experience in a similar role elsewhere and will be knowledgeable in all areas of purchasing procedures, construction techniques and mixed-tenure schemes
  • A high level of mathematical ability and problem-solving skills, with a methodical and logical approach to your work
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy, coupled with strong written and verbal communication skills
  • You will need to have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to work as part of a wider team
  • The ability to influence others within the business to ensure that best practices are shared to aid the Group in achieving its overall objectives
What do I need to achieve and deliver to be effective in this job?
  • Support the wider Commercial and Buying team with new products and innovation by investigating new solutions and innovations within the industry
  • Agree the price specification with manufacturers of key suppliers, preparing the CPC1 (Material Costs) including providing material schedules from working drawings
  • Input material schedules onto the relevant system and produce material budgets for the Surveying team
  • Place material orders and procure additional materials not covered by schedules and place supplementary orders, analysing any variations
  • Place plant orders by liaising with the Construction Director for compound layout and site setup
  • Produce cost reports and provide analysis of material costs for completion, actioning material and plant invoices
To be successful in this role I may have experience in these areas
  • Previous experience of working with RC frame would be highly advantageous although not essential
  • A strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office packages, with the ability to use Microsoft Excel at an advanced level
  • A professional procurement qualification e.g. CIPS
  • A construction related qualification (ONC/HNC/Degree) would be highly desirable
