Take ownership of complex electronics fault diagnosis and build deeper expertise across high-reliability defence manufacturing. You will work across test, production and engineering activities with scope to develop your technical capability. The role combines hands-on electronics diagnosis with wider engineering involvement across manufacturing and product development.
Where you will be based
The role is located in the Greater Manchester area and is mainly site-based (4-5 days a week). This is a permanent, full-time role.
What you will be doing
- Carry out detailed fault diagnosis on analogue and digital PCB assemblies, identifying failures down to individual component level
- Investigate manufacturing test failures to establish root causes and provide clear technical findings to support corrective action
- Use a broad range of manual and automated test equipment including oscilloscopes, multimeters and signal generators to investigate electronic faults
- Support improvements to production yield by identifying recurring technical issues and helping engineering and manufacturing teams implement effective solutions
- Produce technical reports that clearly document fault investigations, findings and recommended actions
- Support the introduction of new test facilities by developing test specifications and clear operator instructions
- Maintain appropriate configuration control across test specifications, instructions and associated engineering documentation
- Work closely with manufacturing, quality, process and design engineers to resolve technical challenges affecting production
- Provide Test Engineering input during product design and development, helping ensure testability and manufacturing requirements are considered before production
- Support engineering activities through to Production Readiness Reviews and the transition into manufacture
Skills and background
- Strong theoretical and practical understanding of electrical and electronic measurement, testing and fault diagnosis
- Proven ability to diagnose faults on electronic sub-assemblies and PCBs down to component level
- Practical experience testing both analogue and digital electronic circuitry
- Confident use of electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters and signal generators alongside automated test systems
- Ability to interpret detailed electronic schematics, engineering drawings, test specifications and related technical documentation
- Experience investigating failures, identifying root causes and communicating technical findings to engineering and manufacturing stakeholders
- Understanding of test specification and instruction generation within a controlled engineering or manufacturing environment
- Experience working collaboratively with manufacturing, quality, process and design engineering disciplines to resolve technical problems
- Familiarity with enterprise resource planning, manufacturing execution and product lifecycle management systems, such as ERP, MES and PLM tools
- Experience recording test activities and supporting non-conformance or quality reporting within manufacturing systems
- Experience gained within defence or another high-reliability electronics manufacturing environment would be advantageous
- Knowledge or practical experience of RF circuitry would be beneficial but is not essential
What you will need
- Strong practical experience in electronic test and component-level fault diagnosis
- Relevant engineering qualification through an apprenticeship and further education route or an engineering or technical degree
- Ability to interpret electronic schematics, drawings and test documentation
- Relevant BEng or BSc degree or a technical engineering or craft apprenticeship to Level 3 combined with further education to Level 4 or equivalent
Salary and rewards
A basic salary in the region of £45,000 is on offer. As well as this, you will have access to:
- Company performance-related bonus of up to £2,500
- Combined employer and employee pension contributions of up to 14%
- Opportunities for paid overtime
- Up to 15 additional flexi-leave days
Equal opportunities
