Job summary

Caterpillar Inc. in Wimborne, Dorset, invites applications for a 12-month Industrial Placement in Manufacturing Engineering within Caterpillar Marine. You will contribute to the production of marine engines and gensets, work on NPI projects, and learn to apply the Caterpillar Production System in a real factory environment.

This placement is for penultimate-year students (integrated masters welcome) aiming for a 2:1 degree, with mentoring and potential pathways into graduate schemes.

Qualifications

• Penultimate year of study required (integrated master's acceptable).
• Minimum 2:1 honours degree in a relevant discipline (Production/Manufacturing/Mechanical/Automotive/Aerospace Engineering).
• 12-month placement duration.

Responsibilities

• Supporting the production of marine engines, generators and associated equipment.
• Participating in projects for new product introduction (NPI).
• Resolving production related problems.
• Component & sub-assembly production routings.
• Learning and applying the Caterpillar Production System (CPS).
• Liaison with shop floor operators and designers on the assembly / manufacture of product.
• Conduct all work in accordance with company policies and procedures.

Location: Wimborne, Dorset

Salary: £26,000 Share Scheme, Pension and 25 days annual leave (plus bank holidays).

*Please note that to be eligible to complete a 12-Month Industrial Placement commencing July 2027, you must be in your penultimate year of study unless enrolled in an integrated master’s program.

Caterpillar, Wimborne

The facility boasts a wealth of hugely experienced designers, engineers and technicians used to providing solutions for commercial, professional and military customers in the marine product range. From design, testing and production, each engine is proven before leaving the premises to ensure the best performance for the end-user. The production products range up to 500 bhp for marine propulsion engines and 200 ekW for our gensets. In addition to the factory, the Wimborne location is home for roles across sales, marketing, product support and engineering for the entire range of Caterpillar marine products.

The role

With the business growing we are looking for a manufacturing engineering placement student at Caterpillar Marine, located in Wimborne, Dorset within the Caterpillar Oil, Gas & Marine Division (COGMD). The Manufacturing Engineering team supports the production of marine engine & genset products ranging from 10kW to over 750kW. This role will focus on ensuring efficient, on-time production of a wide range of marine power products.

Manufacturing Engineering placements offer real life production support experience in a customer-focused environment.

Job duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
