Job summary

A global shipping company is seeking a Mandarin Speaking Second Engineer to oversee engine operations aboard large passenger vessels. This role requires significant experience in engine watch-keeping and maintaining safety standards. Key responsibilities include monitoring engine operations, training personnel, and ensuring compliance with safety protocols. Ideal candidates will possess the STCW Certificate and experience with large vessels, particularly those exceeding 90,000 Gross Tonnage. This is a contract position with a competitive compensation package.

Qualifications

  • Mandatory STCW Certificate of Competency III/2.
  • Experience on board vessels of at least 90,000 Gross Tonnage.
  • Completion of High Voltage and Crowd & Crisis courses required.

Responsibilities

  • Be on board the vessel when the First Engineer Officer is absent.
  • Monitor the safe operation of all main propulsion and auxiliary engines.
  • Inspect assigned work and assure proper execution while minimizing wastage.
  • Control proper disposal of refuse to avoid hazards.
  • Train new personnel in safe working practices.
  • Attend social and entertaining activities when invited.

Compensation: $7,635 - $8,553 / month


Description
  • As a 2nd Engineer Officer aboard our state‑of‑the‑art passenger vessels, you will play an essential role in ensuring the smooth operation of our engine room.
  • Reporting directly to the Staff Engineer, you will oversee engine watch‑keeping and uphold the safety and efficiency of technical systems.
  • Your expertise will help us deliver exceptional experiences for our passengers while maintaining the highest standards of safety and sustainability.

Key Responsibilities
  • By mutual arrangement with the Staff Engineer, to be on board the vessel at any time the First Engineer Officer is absent from the ship.
  • He/She may be assigned to engine control room watch duties by monitoring the safe and proper operation of all main propulsion, auxiliary engines and their belonging systems, machinery and equipment within the engine room.
  • Inspect all assigned work in progress, and on completion, assure that manpower is utilized to the fullest extent, that work is executed properly in accordance with acceptable standards and that no wastage of materials occurs and upkeep of the department.
  • During his watch he/she has to control the proper disposals of all refuse, rags etc. to avoid fire and other hazards during and after work.
  • To train personnel assigned to his engine watch (particularly new personnel) to follow safe working practices, ensuring that functions are fully recognized by each member.
  • To attend when invited by the Master and when duty permits all cocktail parties and social and entertaining activities and functions.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Mandatory:

  • STCW Certificate of Competency III/2
  • Experience on board vessels of at least 90,000 Gross Tonnage
  • High Voltage and Crowd & Crisis courses (to be completed if not already held)

Preferred:

  • Experience with Diesel Electric Wärtsilä 4‑stroke engines,
  • as well as Pod, Azipod, and A.W.T. Scrubber systems
  • ERM and Automation courses
