Job summary

Balfour Beatty’s Major Projects division is seeking an experienced Estimator to support the Lead Estimator in developing cost plans and pricing for civil infrastructure sections. You will collaborate with the project team and supply chain, ensuring consistent estimating approaches and robust documentation.

You will tutor junior staff, record assumptions, and help manage risks and opportunities in pricing. A strong background in infrastructure contracting and estimating tools is essential.

Qualifications

• Proficient in Excel and similar software.
• Excellent client facing/communications skills.
• Experience with Candy Estimating Software and RIB CostX is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Undertake estimates in accordance with SZC policies and procedures.
• Review drawings and specifications to prepare accurate costing sheets for materials, labour and equipment.
• Oversee design options and value solutions; identify attractiveness of a project based on sound estimating principles.
• Mentor and support junior team members.
• Record assumptions and identify risks and opportunities including risk evaluation from a pricing perspective.
• Liaise with project team and supply chain to develop methodologies and principles proposed.
• Oversee and supervise labours, plant, materials and subcontract pricing within Candy.
• Oversee and supervise bills of quantities used to present alliance pricing using Cost X.

About the role

The purpose of the role is:

• Assisting in the Management with the Lead Estimator of a multi skill level estimating team (Senior Estimator, Estimator, Assistant Estimator) to develop both cost planning and pricing for the section of the project.
• Feeding into the Lead Estimator, Deputy Head of Estimating and Head of Estimating on the project to ensure consistency in estimating approach set out by the client.
• Capable of producing various estimating documentation that can be assured both internally and externally.
• Stakeholder management to produce the Estimate e.g., planning, procurement etc.
• Presenting, negotiating and justifying prices produced in an open and honest manner to both senior leaders within the business and/or external customers/partners.

What you'll be doing

• Undertake estimates in accordance with the SZC policies and procedures.
• Review SZC’s drawings and specifications to prepare accurate costing sheets for materials, labour and equipment
• Oversee and/or interrogate design options and ‘value’ solutions, and if appropriate, identify the attractiveness of a project based on sound estimating principles.
• Mentor and support more junior members of the team.
• Record assumptions and identify risks and opportunities including supporting developing the risk evaluation from a pricing/budgetary point of view.
• Liaise with members of the project team & supply chain to develop and understand methodologies and principles proposed.
• Oversee and supervise other to and/or develop from first principles labour, plant material, subcontract pricing within the Alliance’s Estimating Software Candy.
• Oversee and supervise other to and/or develop or check bills of quantities used to present alliance pricing using the Alliance’s quantification Software Cost X.
• Record and track change to the estimate / budget as the estimate inputs mature

Who we're looking for

Essential

• Proficient in the use of excel and similar software.

Desirable

• Experienced estimating background using Candy Estimating Software.
• Experienced estimating background using RIB Cost X Quantification & Estimating Software.
• Experience of working with the AACE principles of Estimating Class and associated maturity
• Mobile and flexible

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

• Infrastructure Main Contractor background ideally in the Civil engineering market.
• Commercial or operational background considered.

Desirable

• Chartered by relevant industry recognised chartership e.g., ICE, CICES, RICS, CIOB Etc
