Job description

Managing Consultant – Market Consultancy
Location: Leatherhead, Surrey (Hybrid: 3 days office / 2 days remote)
Sector Focus: Packaging, Paper, Print & Emerging Markets (sector experience welcomed, but not essential)
Salary: Competitive + performance-based bonus + excellent benefits

Are you an experienced consultant ready to lead strategic engagements, drive client relationships, and shape the future of global industries?

At Smithers Information, we’re expanding our senior consultancy team with the addition of a Managing Consultant — a commercially astute, analytically rigorous leader who can deliver high-impact insights and drive growth for our clients across packaging, paper, print, and emerging technology markets.

This role is ideal for someone who combines strong strategic thinking with hands-on analytical capability, enjoys working with ambiguity, and thrives in client-facing environments. You will be part of a collaborative, high-performing consultancy team, delivering advisory projects that guide corporate strategy, market entry, product innovation, and investment decisions for global clients.

As a Managing Consultant, you will own key client relationships, lead project teams, develop intellectual property, and play a central role in the growth and evolution of our consulting offering.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage strategic consultancy projects from scoping to delivery, ensuring high quality, on-time, and commercially successful outcomes
  • Own senior-level client relationships, becoming a trusted advisor to global brands, investors, and innovators
  • Develop robust market models, forecasts and scenario analyses that drive strategic recommendations
  • Synthesize complex data into clear, actionable insights through compelling storytelling, written reports, and executive presentations
  • Mentor and manage junior consultants and analysts, supporting their growth and ensuring high-quality project execution
  • Support business development activities including proposal writing, pitch meetings, and thought leadership content
  • Shape research methodologies and frameworks that address clients’ most pressing commercial questions
  • Contribute to the evolution of our proprietary market databases and tools, enhancing data assets and analytical rigor

What We’re Looking For:

  • Minimum 5+ years’ experience in a consultancy, strategy, or market intelligence role — ideally with some client-facing and project leadership exposure
  • Demonstrated ability to lead client engagements, manage stakeholders, and deliver strategic value
  • Advanced proficiency in market modelling, Excel-based forecasting, and scenario planning
  • Strong communication skills — confident presenting to senior clients, structuring arguments, and writing clear reports
  • Familiarity with consulting frameworks and tools (e.g., Porter’s Five Forces, value chain analysis, PESTLE)
  • Commercial mindset with an eye for opportunity, and the credibility to influence at senior levels
  • Degree educated (business, economics, science, engineering or related fields); MBA or advanced degree a plus
  • Sector knowledge in packaging, print, or materials industries desirable but in no way essential

Why Join Smithers?

  • Be a part of a globally respected consultancy, working with clients who shape the future of materials, packaging, and print
  • Own projects and client relationships that make a measurable impact
  • Enjoy a collaborative, entrepreneurial environment with exposure to senior decision-makers
  • Accelerate your professional development through strategic engagements, international clients, and varied project work

We Offer:

  • Competitive salary with performance bonus
  • Hybrid working model (3 days in-office / 2 days remote)
  • Private medical insurance
  • 25 days annual leave + bank holidays
  • Early finish on Fridays
  • Retail discount platform & wellbeing support (incl. virtual PT, counselling, nutrition)
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Ongoing learning & development
  • Regular team events in a supportive and inclusive culture
