Job description

This is an opportunity to play a highly visible role at the centre of governance, accountability and regulation. As Manager People Risk - SMCR, you'll act as the Society's lead for SMCR, working with senior leaders across the business to ensure accountability frameworks are effective, regulatory obligations are met, and governance arrangements continue to evolve alongside an increasingly complex regulatory environment.

About the Role

As Manager People Risk - SMCR, you’ll work closely with senior leaders, risk colleagues and stakeholders across the Society, playing a pivotal role in embedding strong governance, accountability and regulatory compliance. You'll provide expert advice on SMCR requirements, oversee certification and Fit & Proper processes, and ensure colleagues operating under the regime understand and effectively discharge their responsibilities.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Acting as the Society's lead for the Senior Managers & Certification Regime, ensuring regulatory obligations are met and maintained.
  • Leading the annual certification and Fit & Proper assessment processes, ensuring they are delivered accurately, consistently and on time.
  • Providing expert advice, guidance and challenge to Senior Managers and Certified colleagues on their regulatory responsibilities and accountability obligations.
  • Monitoring regulatory developments and emerging expectations from the FCA and PRA, translating requirements into practical, sustainable business solutions.
  • Working closely with senior stakeholders to strengthen governance, risk culture and accountability across the Society.
  • Coaching and developing colleagues within the People Risk team to enhance capability and impact and strengthen regulatory expertise.

Whilst this role will initially focus on SMCR, you'll also have the opportunity, over time, to broaden your expertise across the full People Risk landscape through cross-skilling into areas such as People Risk Appetite, frameworks, and controls and Trade Union relationship management, supporting a resilient and collaborative team model.

About You

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in a highly regulated environment and enjoys combining technical regulatory expertise with strategic stakeholder engagement.

You’ll be confident operating at senior levels, interpreting complex regulatory requirements and translating them into practical actions that support both compliance and good customer outcomes.

You’ll likely have:

  • Significant experience of operating within the Senior Managers & Certification Regime or a closely related regulatory framework.
  • Strong knowledge of FCA and PRA expectations and the wider regulatory environment affecting financial services organisations.
  • Experience managing governance, regulatory compliance, risk or control frameworks within a regulated organisation, including implementing new legislative or regulatory requirements.
  • The ability to interpret complex information and deliver meaningful insight.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to build trusted relationships across a wide range of stakeholders and influence senior stakeholders through expert advice, challenge and guidance.
  • The ability to coach, develop and support others.
