Job summary

Menzies LLP is a UK business advisory and accountancy practice with national coverage and international connections. We are seeking a specialist to lead R&D tax claims for innovative clients and to advise on tax planning and incentives.

The role includes preparing HMRC submissions, identifying eligible claims, supporting partners, and driving client relationships through effective communication and cross-functional collaboration.

Qualifications

• CTA/ACA qualified or equivalent.
• Technical background in STEM.
• Excellent knowledge of R&D tax legislation and rules.
• Strong knowledge in relevant STEM areas.
• Effective communication skills at all levels with clients.
• Ability to explain complex technical points clearly to HMRC or clients.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and review R&D claims/AIFs/reports for HMRC submission.
• Communicate with clients in person or by phone to carry out R&D claims, resolve queries, and build relationships.
• Identify potential R&D claims and discuss with clients and prospects.
• Prepare quotes and budgets; manage projects within budget; report to Partners on financials.
• Provide technical advice on incentives and tax planning for innovative companies.
• Support Partners and Relationship Managers on client matters and opportunities.
• Identify and pursue cross-selling opportunities; develop referrer base.
• Coach and train junior staff and trainees in technical, client relations, and business development skills.
• Ensure compliance with the Firm's technical, ethical, and compliance procedures.

Key Responsibilities

• Preparation and review of R&D claims/AIF's/reports for submission to HMRC.
• Communicate directly with clients in person or over the phone where appropriate to carry out R&D claims, resolve queries and develop relationships.
• Identification of potential R&D claims and associated discussions with clients and prospects.
• Preparing quotes, budgets, completing work within budget and reporting to Partners on good financial management.
• Provide technical advice and support to colleagues in relation to innovation incentives and tax planning for innovative companies.
• Provide support to partners and relationship managers on relevant client matters and opportunities.
• Ensure planning and cross-selling opportunities are identified and followed up.
• Increase the client base through an organised approach to business development e.g. networking, client recommendation requests, and developing referrer base.
• Coach and train junior staff and trainees in developing their technical, client relationship and business development skills.
• Ensure the Firm's technical, ethical and compliance procedures are adhered to in all cases.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

• CTA/ACA qualified or equivalent
• Will accept qualified by experience in industry
• Technical background in STEM areas whether academically or through industry expertise
• Self-starter capable of motivating, driving and developing the team.
• Excellent knowledge of R&D tax legislation and rules.
• Strong knowledge in relevant STEM areas, either through academic background or industry experience.
• Effective communication skills at all levels and inter-personal skills in dealing with clients in person.
• Ability to explain and simplify highly technical points for clients to understand and report writing skills in conveying technical points to HMRC.
• Strong relationship building, networking, and business development skills.
