Job description

Management Accountant

Location: Portsmouth, Hampshire (Hybrid Working, 3 days office / 2 days home)

Salary: £40,000 – £45,000 per annum

Benefits: Profit Share Bonus, Healthcare Benefits, Life Assurance and Additional Birthday Leave

We are delighted to be partnering with an established and growing business operating within the environmental services sector to recruit an experienced Management Accountant. This is an excellent opportunity to join a close-knit finance function during an exciting period of business integration, development and growth.

Operating across specialist marine services and waste management, the business forms part of a larger, well-established group and is continuing to evolve. With ambitious growth plans and ongoing investment in its systems and processes, the organisation offers a varied and commercially engaging environment where finance plays an important role in supporting operational performance.

Reporting directly to the Senior Finance Business Partner, the successful candidate will take ownership of key management accounting and financial reporting activities across multiple business units. The position will have a particular focus on the waste management operations, providing financial insight, strengthening reporting processes and supporting operational leaders in understanding business performance.

This is a predominantly management accounting and reporting-focused position, offering considerable scope to influence how financial information is produced, analysed and communicated. Working within a relatively lean finance team, you will benefit from broad exposure across the accounting function, alongside opportunities to contribute to systems integration, process improvements and the continued development of the business.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare accurate monthly management accounts, including P&L, balance sheet and cash flow reporting.
  • Manage key elements of the month-end process, including journals, accruals, prepayments, reconciliations and variance analysis.
  • Investigate financial discrepancies, analyse performance against budgets and forecasts, and provide meaningful commentary to stakeholders.
  • Undertake detailed margin analysis, identifying trends, anomalies and opportunities to improve financial performance.
  • Work closely with operational managers and senior business leaders to provide financial insight and support informed decision-making.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting and wider financial planning activities.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development and improvement of management information, reporting processes and internal financial controls.
  • Support financial reporting and data integration activities as the business transitions towards new accounting systems.
  • Assist with year-end accounting, audit preparation and statutory reporting requirements.
  • Provide guidance and support to junior members of the finance team, contributing to a collaborative and high-performing environment.
About You

We are looking for a technically capable and commercially aware Management Accountant who can operate with a high degree of autonomy and make an immediate contribution to the finance function.

You will ideally bring experience from an operationally focused business, with a strong understanding of management accounting principles and the confidence to investigate, interpret and challenge financial information.

To be successful, you will demonstrate:

  • Part-qualified or fully qualified status in ACCA, CIMA, ACA or an equivalent accounting qualification, with part-qualified candidates ideally approaching completion.
  • Valid UK Drivers License
  • Established experience in a Management Accountant or similar financial reporting position.
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge, particularly across P&L reporting, month-end processes, reconciliations and variance analysis.
  • Advanced Excel skills, including lookups, pivot tables, formulas and SUMIFS.
  • Experience of financial analysis, including margin and operational performance reporting.
  • Confidence working independently, managing competing priorities and delivering accurate reporting within tight deadlines.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to build effective relationships and explain financial information to non-finance stakeholders.
  • A proactive, analytical and inquisitive approach, with the confidence to challenge figures and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Experience with accounting or ERP systems, ideally including Xero, although experience with alternative systems will be considered.

Experience within a multi-entity, operationally focused or evolving business would be advantageous, as would exposure to systems integration or financial process improvement. However, specific sector experience is not essential.

What's on Offer?

This is an opportunity to join a supportive, collaborative finance team within a business undergoing an exciting period of change. Unlike more narrowly defined accounting positions, the role offers exposure to multiple business units, operational stakeholders and a broad range of financial activities.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to take genuine ownership of their responsibilities, contribute to the improvement of financial reporting and develop their experience within a growing group structure.

Alongside a competitive salary of £40,000 – £45,000, the business offers:

  • Hybrid working, with three days in the Portsmouth office and two days working remotely.
  • A discretionary profit share bonus scheme.
  • Healthcare benefits through Medicash, following successful completion of probation.
  • Life assurance from the start of employment.
  • 20 days' annual leave plus bank holidays and an additional day off for your birthday.
  • Exposure to business integration, evolving financial systems and opportunities for professional development.
  • A friendly, supportive and collaborative working environment.

If you are an experienced Management Accountant looking for a varied, hands-on position where you can take ownership, influence financial reporting and contribute to the continued development of a growing business, we would welcome your application
