Job Advert: Makaton Tutor (SEN) – Flexible Hybrid Role
Location:Birmingham Flexible / Hybrid – Children’s Homes & Residential Care Settings
Contract Type: Part-time / Flexible Hours
Start Date: Immediate
Drivers Preferred (not essential)

The Makaton Tutor plays a crucial role in helping children with Special Educational Needs develop their communication skills, confidence, and independence. Working across children’s homes and residential care settings, you will deliver highly personalised sessions that support both expressive and receptive communication in safe, nurturing environments.

Key Responsibilities
Teaching & Communication Support
  • Plan and deliver engaging Makaton-based communication sessions tailored to each child’s needs.

  • Model and embed Makaton signs and symbols into daily routines, learning activities, and therapeutic interactions.

  • Provide guidance to staff teams and carers to ensure consistent communication strategies.

  • Track and monitor progress, adapting approaches as needed.

SEN Support
  • Work with children with a range of needs, including autism, learning disabilities, speech and language delays, and SEMH needs.

  • Build warm, trusting relationships with young people who may have experienced trauma or communication barriers.

  • Support the development of social, emotional, and behavioural regulation.

Collaboration & Professional Practice
  • Collaborate with residential staff teams, care workers, speech and language therapists, and external professionals.

  • Contribute to care plans, EHCP reviews, and communication support strategies.

  • Share resources, training tips, and practical communication tools with teams.

Safeguarding
  • Adhere to all safeguarding and child protection policies.

  • Recognise and respond appropriately to signs of vulnerability or risk.

Person Specification
Essential
  • Makaton training (Level 2 or above)

  • Experience supporting children or young people with SEN

  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills

  • Compassion, resilience, and a child-centred approach

  • Ability to work flexibly across different settings

Desirable
  • Experience working in children’s homes, residential care, or alternative provision

  • Knowledge of speech, language, and communication needs

  • Experience delivering 1:1 or small-group interventions

  • Training in trauma-informed practice
