Job Overview

The Maintenance department are seeking a Maintenance Technician (Mechanical) to join their busy team. We are looking for a highly motivated and professional individual who can prioritise workloads and identify potential improvements to operational system and management processes in order to increase departmental efficiencies. The role involves working Monday to Friday between 08:00 and 16:00, and you will also be required to take part in the emergency on-call rota within the estates department across all operational sites.

The successful candidate should have good diagnostic and fault‑finding skills and be able to read and interpret technical drawings and manuals, as well as have an understanding of electrical installation plans and drawings.

Main Duties of the Job

Work as a member of a multitasking maintenance team providing professional and technical expertise with an effective and efficient focus on service delivery. Carry out or oversee the repair, maintenance or installation of complex plant and equipment associated with premises administered by the Trust Estates department. Maintain and repair a wide range of mechanical, electrical and medical plant & equipment and building faults. Deputise for Team Leaders and call approved contractors for maintenance breakdowns and repairs when required. Undertake planned and reactive maintenance of essential systems across the Trust estate, analyse faults and undertake rectifications to ensure continuity of service. Work closely with a multi‑skilled, multidisciplinary maintenance team and uphold the Trust’s values and dress code.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

Carry out day‑to‑day mechanical repairs, planned maintenance and improvements to the Trust’s buildings in a manner that conforms to statutory regulations and codes of practice. Be responsible for installation of mechanical new work. Participate in the emergency on‑call as required by contractual obligation to ensure safe systems and service continuity, including cross‑site working.

Qualifications

Essential criteria:

  • Completed and passed a 4‑year apprenticeship City & Guilds or NVQ level 3
  • Mechanical/plumbing training for electricians or electrical training for mechanical

Desirable criteria:

  • Continuing training to latest electrical regulations
  • Competent person – Medical Gas Authorised Person; electrical training for electrical technicians; legionella responsible person training for mechanical technicians
Experience

Essential criteria:

  • Experience in building services maintenance with a demonstrable track record of competence
  • Postholder to be multi‑skilled and able to deal with mechanical, building and electrical maintenance

Desirable criteria:

  • Previous experience in a large acute hospital
  • Risk assessment completion
  • Manual handling
Knowledge

DBS Disclosure

Trust policy requires that the cost of submitting & processing the successful applicant’s DBS application be recovered via salary deduction following start in post. The amount of £23 (standard disclosure) or £43 (enhanced disclosure) will be deducted from salary, in manageable monthly instalments for up to 3 months following commencement of employment. Bank posts require upfront payment. DBS applications submitted from 2nd December will be subject to the new DBS fee of £26.50 (standard) and £54.50 (enhanced).
