Maintenance Technician

Location: Hyde.
Salary: £60,671.
Shift: 4 on 4 off days and nights (2 days, 2 nights, 12 hour shifts).

About the Role

Our client are seeking a motivated and skilled Maintenance Technician to join their high-performing engineering team. You will play a key role in delivering and sustaining our reliability agenda, providing first-line support to all plant and process operations, and driving continuous improvement across our manufacturing site.

This is a hands‑on role in a fast-paced FMCG environment where safety, reliability, and efficiency are paramount. You will use your technical expertise to reduce downtime, extend equipment life, and contribute to a culture of operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Safety

  • Champion their safety culture and maintain the highest standards of GMP, HSE, and process control.
  • Act as a role model for safe and efficient working practices.
  • Support the Engineering Team Leader as required.
  • Demonstrate flexibility in working patterns to provide cover for holidays and absences.

People & Collaboration

  • Actively participate in emergency response, first aid, and safety training; become proficient in using safety and emergency equipment.
  • Take ownership of your learning and development, supporting your long-term career progression.
  • Build strong, collaborative relationships across departments, suppliers, and contractors.
  • Coach and support Technical Operators in first-line maintenance and technical skill development.
  • Ensure all contractors and external partners comply with company policies and safety standards.

Operational Excellence

  • Perform maintenance and repair work on pneumatic, mechanical, and electrical systems to a high standard.
  • Respond quickly and effectively to equipment breakdowns, minimizing downtime.
  • Lead and support Continuous Improvement (CI) initiatives to enhance performance, efficiency, and reliability.
  • Apply lean tools and principles to eliminate waste and error.
  • Use advanced diagnostic tools such as PLC thermal imaging, and ultrasonic testing to identify and resolve recurring issues.

Reliability & Standards

  • Execute Preventive Maintenance (PPM) to standard, ensuring all activities are recorded accurately in the CMMS.
  • Maintain comprehensive engineering shift reports and elevate issues as required.
  • Contribute to root cause analysis and implement corrective actions to prevent repeat failures.
  • Maintain the 5S standard across workshops and stores.
  • Design and implement autonomous maintenance routines in collaboration with operations teams.

Skills & Experience Required

  • Strong written, numerical, and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient in MS Office applications.
  • In-depth knowledge and experience in one or more of the following: Facilities, Electrical, Mechanical, Pneumatics, Materials.
  • Ability to interpret and work from engineering schematics (Mechanical/Electrical/Pneumatic/PI&D).
  • Excellent fault-finding and problem-solving skills, ideally using lean or structured methodologies.
  • Proven experience within a fast-moving food manufacturing or FMCG environment.
  • Strong time management skills and ability to perform under pressure.
  • Self‑motivated, adaptable, and capable of working independently or as part of a team.

Qualifications

  • Time-served Engineering Apprenticeship in a manufacturing (FMCG) environment.
  • Recognised qualification in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (NVQ Level 3 or equivalent).
  • Appropriate Health & Safety training and certifications.
