Job summary

United Utilities is seeking a Maintenance Planner for Crewe Wastewater Treatment Works to coordinate maintenance across UU sites, delivering reliable asset performance and safe operations. You will build detailed job plans, including resources, durations, materials, tools and safety requirements, and work closely with operations, maintenance and engineering teams to optimise schedules.

A Full UK Driving Licence is required; the role is onsite, 37 hours per week, with a competitive benefits

Qualifications

  • Qualified to HNC or NVQ level 3 (or equivalent) in Mechanical, Electrical, or Instrumentation engineering.
  • Significant maintenance experience in water or similar industry.
  • Ability to estimate labour, materials and skill requirements.
  • Strong planning and organisational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Plan maintenance activities and develop job plans with required resources.
  • Plan asset downtime to minimise disruption.
  • Create/update maintenance job plans with operations, maintenance and engineering teams.
  • Coordinate required asset availability or shutdowns for proactive maintenance.
  • Drive continuous improvement in planning and scheduling.
  • Manage spares, materials and services; build BOMs.

The Role

You will be responsible for the planning and of specified maintenance activities across a number of UU sites in a defined area. You'll be working with the maintenance teams to deliver safe and cost effective asset reliability, playing a key part in the move from reactive to proactive maintenance. Liaising with the maintenance and operational teams you will develop maintenance job plans that are accurate and ready for work scheduling and execution. This will include; people, skillsets requirements, estimated job duration, materials or parts requirements, special tools/ equipment, developing work instructions which include essential safety requirements

What You'll Be Doing
  • Manage and request spares, materials and services for maintenance activities, ensuring accurate specifications and building bills of materials for critical and repeat-failure assets.
  • Review all newly raised corrective work to confirm appropriate priority and readiness for planning.
  • Proactively plan asset downtime to minimise operational disruption and maintain treatment continuity.
  • Create, update and improve the library of maintenance job plans, adapting them with operations, maintenance and engineering teams to enhance asset reliability.
  • Drive continuous improvement within the planning and scheduling function, supporting the development of executable schedules and contributing to regular short- and long-term planning meetings.
  • Coordinate required asset availability or shutdowns for proactive maintenance and report on missed opportunities to support ongoing process improvement.
What We’re Looking For

To be considered for this role you will need to be qualified to either HNC or NVQ level 3 (or equivalent) in a Mechanical, Electrical, or Instrumentation engineering discipline and have significant experience gained through either a time served apprenticeship or hands‑on experience, which is essential to meet the needs of the business in relevant related fields. You'll have a detailed engineering background along with initiative and attention to detail together with experience of maintenance across a water or other similar industry. You will also have:

  • Strong maintenance expertise with the ability to accurately estimate labour, materials and skill requirements, supported by solid knowledge of plant operations, equipment, and Health & Safety processes.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, with a good working understanding of SAP, MARS ways of working, work orders and maintenance planning principles.
  • Skilled in root cause and failure analysis, applying logical, efficient planning to maximise resource use and asset availability.
  • Excellent communicator with the ability to work effectively across technical and non‑technical teams as well as independently.
  • Awareness of industry safety standards, work authorisation procedures

A Full UK Driving Licence is required for the role.
