Harbour Healthcare – Maintenance Officer, 37.5 hours

£12.50 Per Hour

Harbour Healthcare are recruiting for a Maintenance Officer in Sunderland. Your primary aim is to ensure our care home is well maintained. Your role will include ensuring all legal documents are completed, carrying out day to day maintenance on the fabric of the building, its services and grounds to keep the Care Centre safe and efficiently functional. You may be on call, but only for emergencies.

Skills, Knowledge & Qualifications
  • Required:
    • General maintenance knowledge / experience (e.g., minor electrical, plumbing, joinery)
    • Good communication skills
    • Confident team player
    • Clean driving licence
    • Use of a car or similar vehicle
    • Willingness to receive training on current Health & Safety / EHO issues
    • Satisfactory Police check and check against the POVA List (where applicable)
  • Desired:
    • Understanding of central heating systems, laundry equipment and hot & cold water systems
    • Knowledge of current Health & Safety regulations
Main Responsibilities
  • General Maintenance:
    • Ensure ALL Legal documentation is completed on time.
    • Report and act on any defects to appliances, damaged furniture/equipment, or hazards to the Home Manager.
    • Maintain the Care Centre exterior, including sheds, outbuildings and waste areas.
    • Clear snow and grit drive, paths and access areas for Clients, Visitors or Staff.
    • Maintain external gardens, flower beds, and hanging baskets to a high standard.
    • Clean all signs and lighting outside the Care Centre.
    • Carry out patching/decorating as required to maintain standards.
    • Test fire alarm system weekly and log results; check call points, fire exits, and emergency lighting as per procedures.
    • Keep ventilation units and lights clean; replace defective bulbs/diffusers.
    • Test all portable appliances as specified in procedures.
    • Test and record water temperatures as specified in procedures.
    • Maintain a Maintenance Book for recording defects and repairs/replacements daily.
    • Assist/supervise deliveries to the Care Centre; monitor delivered goods closely.
  • Communication:
    • Liaise with the Home Manager or delegated staff regarding maintenance work.
    • Participate in staff and client meetings as required.
  • Training & Development:
    • Attend mandatory training days/courses, on or off site, as required.
    • Maintain professional knowledge and competence.
  • Health & Safety:
    • Ensure paints/varnishes are used and stored per manufacturers’ instructions.
    • Keep painting/varnishing areas ventilated and safe for Clients, Visitors and Staff.
    • Report any illness or accidents involving Clients or staff to the Home Manager or person in charge.
    • Understand and implement the Care Centre’s Health & Safety policy, and Emergency and Fire procedures.
    • Promote safe working practices in the Care Centre.
