Job Summary

An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, conscientious and dedicated maintenance craftsperson (Electrical) to join a team of engineering craftsperson responsible for the maintenance and repair of electrical plant and equipment at buildings maintained by CHoICE Facilities Services. The role will require the post holder to undertake the role of Competent Person (CP) as defined within Health Technical Memorandum (HTM) 00 for multiple engineer services and support CHoICE to meet its statutory, mandatory and best practice commitments to its existing partners.

As part of the role, the post holder will be required to be flexible and have a wide ranging knowledge of electrical systems to ensure maintenance, repair and installation activities can be completed in the most efficient and effective manner whilst providing the best possible services. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to operate and maintain a large scale electrical system which includes: low voltage distribution boards, LV switchboards, LV small power distribution, general and emergency lighting systems, theatre operating lights, nurse call systems, CCTV systems, swipe access systems and uninterruptable power supplies.

The role will also require participation in the current on‑call rota and will need to undertake overtime when the service needs dictate, for which appropriate payments will be made.

Main duties of the job

All applicants must have a positive, friendly and co‑operative manner whilst being prepared to be flexible to meet the service needs of a large Acute NHS Trust. Key elements of the role will require the applicant to use their own initiative when undertaking a range of problem solving scenarios to allow for a satisfactory completion of assigned tasks whilst adapting to the changing demands of the role. The role will also require the post holder to provide technical advice, guidance and where necessary supervision to other CFS staff, contractors and Trust colleagues alike.

Successful applicants will need to have a knowledge of plumbing and mechanical systems with a detailed knowledge of electrical systems typically found within a large NHS Trust. Completion of a BTEC/ONC, City & Guilds or NVQ Level 3 in electrical engineering or equivalent is essential as well as the completion of a formally recognised and accredited apprenticeship within a relevant engineering discipline.

Job Description – Responsibilities
  • To undertake actual maintenance and installation work/activities where appropriate across the whole range of engineering services managed/maintained by CFS.
  • Require the undertaking of surveys, inspections, fault finding, servicing and rectification of engineering system faults whilst also providing technical advice, guidance and where appropriate supervision to other CFS staff, contractors and Trust colleagues alike.
  • Participate in the current CFS shift pattern/system, current on‑call rota and undertake overtime when the service needs dictate, for which appropriate payments will be made.
Person Specification – Experience (Essential)
  • Knowledge and experience of mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems typically found within a large NHS Acute Trust.
  • Detailed knowledge and experience of electrical system requirements and regulations typically found within large NHS Acute Trust acquired through qualifications and relevant experience.
  • Complex fault diagnosis required, interpreting technical issues and formulating technical solutions to improve performance and maintain the service.
  • Have suitable and sufficient experience as a competent person to a level able to accept a permit to work from an authorised person.
Person Specification – Experience (Desirable)
  • Experience of working within an NHS hospital environment.
  • Experience of operating Building Management Systems (BMS).
Physical Skills – Essential
  • Is able to travel and work at all Trust sites.
  • Is able to undertake moderate physical activities for long periods throughout a typical working day.
  • Is able to complete tasks which require short intense bursts of effort before returning to moderate physical work.
  • Undertake regular moving and handling activities.
  • Requirement for highly developed physical dexterity, for hand and eye co‑ordination and manipulation of fine tools.
Qualifications – Essential
  • Basic numeracy & literacy skills to level 1 or equivalent.
  • Basic IT skills.
  • BTEC/ONC, City & Guilds or NVQ level 3 or equivalent in suitable engineering related discipline.
  • Completion of recognised and accredited apprenticeship in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Completion of specialist engineering related training via formulised training or suitable experience.
Qualifications – Desirable
  • C & G 2391 Inspection & Testing of Electrical systems.
  • City & Guilds 2377 Portable Appliance Testing.
  • LV Competent Person Certificate.
Skills and Knowledge – Essential
  • Detailed knowledge of the current UK Electrical Wiring Regulations (18th Edition).
  • Able to use their own initiative when undertaking a range of problem solving scenarios to allow for a satisfactory completion.
  • To have the ability to adapt to the changing demands of the role including the reaction to emergency situations.
  • Able to prioritise their own workload and the workload of others ensuring that high quality patient care and SLA targets are achieved.
  • Regularly provide and receive routine information and, on occasion, complex or sensitive information with a range of Estates work colleagues, other Trust colleagues and external Trust/CFS contacts.
  • Self‑motivated with a desire to improve current practices.
  • Understand and sympathise with issues relating to clinical staff/patients where Estates work has an impact on the clinical environment.
  • Able to operate and use computer systems such as electronic asbestos register, labour management system, pneumatic tube system, building management system and fire alarm systems.
  • Able to adopt a flexible approach to working hours and on‑call shift requirements.
Skills and Knowledge – Desirable
  • Knowledge of HTMs.
  • Knowledge of planned preventative maintenance systems.
  • Knowledge of building management systems (BMS).
